1500 - 2000 rpm noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

1.9tdi awx 130bhp, 90k, serviced in and around every 10k.

Intermittent noise when I accelerate above 1500rpm, and stops after 2000rpm. Sounds a bit like a tearing/rattle and seems to emanate from behind the glovebox or passenger side of the engine. Sometimes worse than others. it's not that terribly bad, but I'm in the process of tidying the car up.

I know it's hard to diagnose these noises without hearing them, and that the engine is throaty around these rpm's.

Anyone have any ideas?

Checked the skoda badge in the engine bay? It rattles if not attached properly. Other than that, then my car also rattles from the glove box some times, i just can't be bothered looking for what it could be.

Two common ones are the air intake pipe and the bonnet release cable.

Yeah, My Badge was rattling, but ive sorted that out, thanks to these forums.

Its my first diesel car, after coming from a boring but bombproof 98 Toyota corolla 1.4 petrol. Most of my family have various diesels so i do know they are a lot louder than petrol's.

There`s no excessive shuddering with the car, on idle the vibration is not there, although comes in slightly if i rev it up to the rpms.

The car had a leak in the flexi exhaust pipe, where a specialist welded in a new flexi,Had a good mechanic look at the work after it was done and he said it was fine. Could this be part of the rattle? its not that loud and i can`t hear it with the radio on, but sometimes i like to drive with no radio.

The rattle does not sound like something loose, (i think), and it happens when going up in RPM and comming down in RPM, i.e foot off the accelerator. Not the whole time though.

Checked the air intake pipe, it seems fine. Looking for the bonnet release cable to check it!

Is there anything specific in the engine bay, in front of the glovebox that could be causing this issue, or does most of the sound from the engine come through that part of the dash?

If you have someone to help you then get them to sit in the car and slowly rev the engine to the revs that you hear the noise while you listen under the bonnet.

Might help to pinpoint where it's coming from.

Put on oem mudflaps at the weekend, noticed that the front undertray was loose on one side, and the front fixing, where the m6 nut is, was wasted. Tied it up a bit and rattle gone ( well I hope it is!), so happy enough.

So going to replace the undertray at some stage.

What's best?

OEM ? - which I believe are quite expensive.

Or some of the eBay items? Some ones on there for circa £50 incl p&p

Has anyone any experiences with the cheaper alternatives?
