Here in Denmark the government and equivalent to the AA/RAC did a random test of tyres in a large supermarket car park on Saturday. I was alarmed to read that the majority of people had summer tyres fitted in the winter period and a further percentile didn't even have legal tread limits.

They repeated the test once again in a high end home store, surprisingly the results were very different as we're the care parked in the car park.

Honestly I don't know what the legal limits are but I do know how to check when the tyres need changing with the treadwear indicators. On the other hand my tyres are checked every 6 months by a tyre store where they are also changed, cleaned and rebalanced on the wheel.

There must be something clearly wrong with you if you couldnt see you have bald tyres over a 6 month period. Either cant be arsed to change it or actually havent seen it.

SWMBO would rely on the MOT and bi-annual service to check her tyre pressure never mind the tread. And she wouldn't bother with either of them unless she got a reminder. You underestimate just how little many people think about their cars. This chap/chapess probably thinks nothing is wrong because no one has told them.
