Skoda: how do you say it?

Featured Replies

I have always said Skoader but a letter in autocar says a new advert (which I have not seen) pronounces it as Skodder. Another version I have heard is Ssssshkoader (sort of a bit of Sean Connery going on at the beinning.) Which is right? :/

Schkoda.

Shurely you mean Shawn Connery. I pronounce it Skoda. HTH

UK English = Skoda (like it is spelt) even if the Czechs pronounce is shkoader.

Noticed the new Dacia adverts pronounce it Dach-ia, when Top gear have always said "Dase-ia"

Same with Porsche VS Porsch-A etc etc. Just those bloody foreigners pronouncing it in their own way! ;)

There was a VW advert a while back that pronounced it VolksVagen..I thought it was Volkswagen..

same with VW the German pronounciation of Volkswagen is VolksVagen.

Schkoda.

^^ Thats the one. Shh-Koda

The 'proper' way is as above - SHH-koda

The UK way is 'Catchphrase' - say what you see :giggle:

Alternatively for the narrow minded it's - Volkswagens (or Vagens) love child ;)

Same with Fabia or Farbia, Octavia or Octarvia or as one customer enquired about - the new Citi60 yes 60 not GO

Skoda, with S as in "stop". Shh-koda/Schkoda sounds horrible.

Also, Dacia is pronounced Dach-ia. The c is like ch in chocolate.

Bloody hell! I've heard that before. You didn't happen to sell a Citigo to a Swedish gal that day, did you?

For "Skoda" i always say - its really just a VW actually or an Audi re-badged as normally when the word skoda comes out my mouth they **** themselves.

Definately not Swedish Dakks but funny to know that it isn't just one person who thinks it

I didn't mean the City60-customer was Swedish. But I heard the same thing from my ex-gf when she bought her Citigo down in London. I assumed she must've been there and overheard. I doubt many people would say something that stupid. That's one in a million, mate.

She's about 1.72m, blue eyes, dark brown hair with blue highlights and bought a gray/silver high spec Citigo. Name's Andersson (Swedish spelling, with two s).

Sh-koda. Because its the native pronunciation and means 'thats a shame' in Polish :)

In Polish dialog:

'What car have you got?'

'An Octavia'

'Ah, Skoda/Thats a shame'

Sorry mate, mis-read that.

Don't think that was us who supplied the your girlfriends car. There could well be another Citi60 customer out there?

To be precise, the german pronunciation is: "Folksvagen".

(Sorry for being a pedantic old fart)

Hehe, looks like you're right. Must've been another one then. Kill it before it lays eggs!

I always did that " it's a vw with a different badge" well it isn't is it ! ;) oh I've got a vw :D

In Ukrainian it means "harm", I think in Polish it may have another meaning close to that one ;) In Russian it is very informal and it means a "mischievous child", which always amused me.

Strangely this has been asked before, a vote was taken too: http://www.briskoda....pronounce-skoda

I still say SkOda. VWs are VolkesVargons. Yes I noticed the new Dacha radio ads, I wondered if it was a new brand, then realised it was for Dacia. I call them as Top Gear, a Dase-ie.

As for Porsche, I say it both ways. "This Porsh Nine-eleven is made by Porsh-uh". I never say "Porsher 911".

I'm still undicided about Octavia. Oct-ar-via or Oct-ay-via. I think I mostly call them a Octarvia.

I'm sure I've read that Vauxhall/Opal had to change the name of the Nova as it had some strange meaning in Spanish.
