So my/our Mk2 Project starts

Featured Replies

Having only had our Mk1 Skoda for 5 weeks and I set about doing all the work to the level of keeping the car till it drops. I changed EVERY thing and anything to keep it sweet as with it's 58k only miles on a 52 plate, even the cam belt and water pump.. It's a really nice car now.. BUT!!

there's always a BUT!!

I only gone and bought a Mk2 Octavia Diesel !

But there is another BUT it's had a small bump......

Nothing I can't fix but it was a bit of fun trying to find the parts.. Bumpers are clearly a sort after part. But I got a nice one from tup north I will post the places details as they were very good to deal with.

So once the parts arrive I will set about fixing it.. I am so pleased to be able to get such a new car for my wife to have.. For us this will really be a great car to have.

I have got a new wing but not sure I will really need it to be honest but I best have it ready in case even if it is to just line up the body work as reference.

Head light escaped damage which was a supprise and so has the air bag. But the light is on.. So I will hook it up to the comptuer and see what it is saying.. had this before on a BMW and the seat had a sensor on it.

Either way if I have to have the ECU re programmed I have a contact for that but never used him as yet. So been busy with the Mk1 and now we both 1 and 2 :giggle:

Good job, hope you get it sorted it, if you have a new wing and are getting paintwork rectified you may as well fire it on and scrap you dented wing.

How about the bonnet, it does appear open but even then it looks a bit askew, and the chrome grill, maybe justa clip broken behind it but I could imagine if the wing is dented and the front bumper there isnt much panel gap to save the bonnet from getting a little tweak

Like wee projects like this, look forward to updates.

Plenty bumpers on eBay, you could have got a Vrs one.

Agree VRS bumper does look good but all the bits incl fog lights are expensive :(

that did cross my mind but I stopped my self. I am not new to tweeking VW's I was one of the first people to Mod a VW Corrado when they were new and loads of other VWs over the mid 90's in the mags and stuff.. I then packed it all in for classic cars Porsche and now back on VW's again but new T5's as tricked out campers from Panel vans.

I want to buy Taxi G's Alloys and pop in a pair of standard Fog lights I think that will be more than enough for the wife. it will look abit more than just a standard classic model then.

Ok been a busy morning today I started at 6.30 am and got this far, Lucky the Del company dropped off the bumper and wing just as I was walking about swearing where's my ****** bumper and they arrived LOL!!

So that ment after playing with the tonne of wrapping they put on it I got the bumper out and to be fair to them it was a good one..

I am going to need a few plastic parts that are broke and I will ask any one reading this if they know some one who is breaking one let me know it's the small plastic parts under the head lights and a few screws and the likes.

So , I managed to save the wing Easy really unpicked the folded over edge and got that right, I made the metal work a nice tight fit to the light.. Just right then I stepped back and looked at the factory fit light and there's a HUGE bloody gap!! I am used to £100k Porsches so I had to reshape the metal back to a 1/8th gap like 924's where all those years back !! this is a new car in my book the panel gaps are crators!!

Never mind.. so now I have nice factory gap round the head light and the corner of the wing and light.. I have re shaped the wing with the fold line that smoothly runs down the wing to the light that's hardly going to need any filler in there. Just the way I like it..

Had to reshape the bumper slam panel and that's was like tin plate a joke really was doing that with my hand!

So wing saved on to the bonnet that was dead easy and took 1/5th of the time to do over the wing I had a replacement wing but I am a metal man so It was just a matter of some time.

As the bonnet had stretched abit ( Normal in this sort of case) Al and I sorted that out and now it's right and lined but.. trounble is now the head light on the other side ( not effected ) is slightly off set to the left in my way for my nice lined up bonnet so I will have to move the head light a tad but in general it's gone dead easy so far which is nice..

So in just a few hours 6 I have this..ready to put in for DA and final fill, will not need much so that's good.

Last pick is a mock up really to test alinement but all is sorted so now to DA the bumper ready for some paint, No pipes where damaged and every thing looks decent hardly anything really still shocked they wrote it off but there you go.. that's the insurance companies for you.

That's what I would have thought but when you read some of the details of these insurance claims you quickly see why cars get written off for what appears to be something that's relatively minor. The costs of the approved repairer combined with lengthy timeframes, long distances and courtesy cars seem to quickly push costs up to completely ludicrous levels despite most of it being completely unnecessary.

Getting there champ!

certainly am and I am gearing my self towards your wheels. Also got to get some pennies togeather but it is my intention to get them at this stage.

As you can see in the first picture the bonnet had popped ( kinked ) in the middle it's rasied but with some work and a stretch we were able to get that dressed out and more important strong again. Every thing then lined back up again in place. Even round the grill area where the inner skin had moved but with some work it all lined back up again and I will put some weld tacks in place and sickaflex which is what the factory use to bond the inner to the outer with no welding but I am old school.

I am just to add strength to the bonnet nose area I am total sure it's ok where is it to be honest but if I sickaflex the grill in place once I am happy where it is. That will add even more rigidness to the front and there fore it will not flex in the future and crack the new paint. It's all down to the Hours I can make time for over the next week.. I am going to be wild only cos I can put them on a credit card " Fog lights " I think for £49.99 on ebay posted to your house.. The Fogs do give the front end abit of umph...... and as I have the bumper off I am going to order some. as with anything is ebay the best place or is the local main stealer worth a punt .. for an orginal pair.

That pic doesn't show the metal work in the wing I will try and work out my phone picture up loading ( not very good at that bit ) LOL..

Oh that will mean I will have flog light blanking plates for sale and as the old bumper had all the plastic parts in the bottom I don't need any one else need them let me know.. I have 3 sections of the black plastic in the old bumper and will have two fog light covers also = beer money only. :-)

Looking good mate! Same colour as mine too. Good luck with the rest of the work.

FP.

Looking very good so far. Don't buy fogs from a dealer. They are ridiculous money.

Ok Ebay it is then. £49.99 at my door I can make a wire loom and I have a switch I can use with fog light on so it looks factory. Just got to solder a wire on.. fuse it, then the front will look nice and smart and Taxi G's alloys should make for a nice smart ride.

I Have asked the guys in the next unit that do trade clean ups for cars that go on sale to give the interior a good clean up and the seats.. As they must have had a baby before it's clean but some general stains on that grey fabric on the seats.. If it was going to be my car I would get the seats out and recover them in leather but as I am still waiting to find time to retrim my own T5 custom camper van then that's just not going to happen. Yes I can sew as well.. When you do custom cars for a hobbie you have to learn to do it all.. :-( hence why mine are taking years to do now adays

I popped into the main stealer today and ordered all the plastic parts I think I need.

I have to say the drawings on the computer to what you want are a joke!!

I have better drawings on the back of a fag packet!! that I did than the main stealer had!

Anyway I had to buy a job lot of bolts and stuff to cover what I might need!! not what I know I need.. work that out!!

ANyway I got it all booked in and I even got a free pen out of it.. mainly cos I walked off with it before I noticed I had it LOL!!!

It's a step closer.. the bumper I striped that right down to the bear bones now and DA'd it off and filled the stone chips and the odd larger chip. 6X filler for bumpers !! Geeeee I forgot how hard that stuff goes !! 3!! yes 3 320 sanding discs later !! I got it smooth..

Anyway it's sanded and scotched, steam cleaned and degreased ready for primer tomorrow

THen back on to DA, Fill and primer the wing and bonnet.

Getting there slowly.. I have put in only 8hrs into it so far. I am expecting to put in at least 22hrs on the whole thing. but my time is free.

Right been a while as this has been a side line project for me. But in the last few days I have managed to push the car to the point it's done as such

So now, I have bought the fog lights from that ebay listing peeps mentioned and I saw. Only down side is that the fogs don't come with bulb holders so I have got a pair from a Pug306 and they almost fit, well they will do in about 5mins with a small file

Just fitting those to the car has changed the whole front end for the better I feel..

I have just to play about with some of the trim later.. and the fitment of the front bumper on the off side. I know what I can do there.

then I have to wait till it's dry and then I can mop the car and detail it. That will come out nice then.. I have to mop the panels I have painted anyway so might as well do the whole car then.

BUT i have an issue a misfire when driving it .. I am thinking it's poss I hope it is wire harness to the injectors. It's a common issue on Passat PD engines as it's the same engine I am thinking this could be the issue.

The car has had a new Turbo by a local garage for the PO. I just wonder if this was mis diagnosed by him

Anyway if it is just the harness then I have a nice new turbo !

So you want to know what it looks like now !!

Drives nice just small things I want to change.. I need to drive it about first for a while to shake it down and work out any issues. Seat belts where easy to change just got to get the dash light reset now it's got new seat belts.. ( old ones had locked causing the airbag light to come on ) had to cut them out as they had locked tight. 598725_536284516394324_748267774_n.jpg

I only needed a bumper in all this.. The wing I repaired to the point of very little and I mean very little filler was needed but that's 20 years of messing with old classic cars where I have to make panels from scratch.

I bought a wing for the car and didn't need it, so

FOR SALE one off side ( drivers side wing )

I bought it for this project and didn't need it so if you want it £45 from Southampton I can post as I have not even opened the box from when it arrived

The main issue was the parts department at the local Skoda dealer!! the computer was utter rubbish for the parts listed so I had to buy alot of plastic trim and junk and screws as a just in case I needed that or this.. terrible really the parts guys was very sorry about it but he said you want to see the Nissan computer you might as well just guess !!! LOL..

So apart from sorting out the inside with a big clean and the mis fire ( wire loom I hope ) it's going to be a very good work horse

I will end up with the Mk1 Octavia out of this deal with my wife she gets the new one.. never mind I have a phew fast toys to play with on sunny days.. So don't get thinking a Mk1 Octavia driver is poor.. I'm only saving my money so I can rip up the roads in the summer with the Porsche LOL!!

Looks good now:)

I've just got the very same fog lights as you from eBay and didn't come with the bulbs. Those H8 bulbs are expensive too. How did you wire yours up to work?

  • Author

Right

I have got Pug 306 bulbs and holders from the scrap yard they where free as he lets me have chaff as he calls it..

So I had to file a corner of the holder to make it twist and lock

I have a light swtich from a VW from the yard £4

that has rear fogs and also lower fog lights ( eg front )

I have yet to connect it all up but done it on customiszed T5's wire direct to the battery with a fuse to the lights and the switch

only issue I had was at MOT and he mentioned I should get a warning light really for when they are on.. to be honest it's so rare they are on it's unreal really..

It's more to tidy up the front end..

Always pop to your local scrap yard for bulbs sounds tight but I have a hand full in each car and that's always a long term money saver..

Oh next thing I am going to add on is central locking key fob..

it's got central locking just not on the key romotely ( basic model ) so I am going to add that on..

Any one done this?

There's a thread running on this at the moment. I think you need an upgraded CCU and get it programmed with vcds to remote.

Thanks for fog light tips. I'm yet to screw them In.

only issue I had was at MOT and he mentioned I should get a warning light really for when they are on.. to be honest it's so rare they are on it's unreal really..

The warning light for the front fogs is on the switch itself. The front fog symbol illuminates brighter.

The rear fogs are different, no additional switch illumination but an amber light in the dash instead...

I put my front fog lights in earlier tonight. Its a very quick and easy job.
