Removing Number Plates

Featured Replies

Hi all, anyone got any advice on removing stuck on number plates on my 59 Octavia. I've got personal ones made up but I've heard the old ones can be a bitch to remove.

I started to prise mine with a plastic butter knife, then ran some nylon cord (cat gut type stuff) behind it to cut through the glue.

They were pretty easy in the end.

Try a hairdryer till the adhesive warms up then pull away gently.

i just got a flat head screw driver and pried it off with that can be right pain though and have to take your time as to not damage the paint!

Sawing action with a lower E guitar string ;)

I'm pleased to say that my dealer drilled and screwed the plates to my car (and yes, they have used the proper "holes" for this. Not just giving a drill to the work experience guy and letting him randomly drill holes.

So when it came to replacing my plates - one screwdriver and a few minutes is all that was required :)

Let's hope you don't discover what I did when I removed my rear number plate!

Could have potentially been taxi plates on it.

But I guess it could have been mis-drilled holes?

Yep, some numpty at the original supplying dealer decided to screw the self tappers direclty through the body work, not once but twice.

The fact that Skoda had gone to all that effort to pre-drill the holes and protect them with plastic plugs soley for the purpose of securing the number plate and preventing corrosion was clearly wasted on this so called 'Skoda Technician'.

Luckily Skoda UK thought the same too and repaired the boot lid free of charge.

I thought it was bullet holes from a drive by shooting....

:giggle:

The shock was about the same when I saw them!!!

That is exactly what I feared when I removed mine. But it would appear my local dealership have people with at least a little sense :)

As an update, I pulled the old ones off with a little help from hot water and then stripped off the sticky with thinners. There were also pre-drilled holes in front and back but I stuck the new ones on. Job done...
