New or ex Lease

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am long term lurker! :)

I asked this on an Irish forum, but since you lads are enthusiasts I would really appreciate your input. These are euro figures btw :)

I am changing my car and have got an got a very good price on a new VRS 2.0 TDI. The price is 27900.

I then spoke to another garage and they have a demo coming in and it will be 3 months old when it arrives, still on 131 plate and will have circa 15k km on it. It will get a full service and any issues with tires and they will replace them, valet it and I will get the remaining 33 month warranty.

They were given me the car at 24950 euro.

The repayments over 4 yrs were 369 which are well within my budget.

Anyway I got a call from the other garage to say that the new car, from this week, was qualifying for 0% interest, but it had to be over a 3 year period.

The cost though per month is 525 quid, which is a fair amount of a difference.

What this means now is that the difference between the new car and the 3 month car is down to 1100 euro.

SO, what would you lads do, is the fact its a 3 month old car on a 131 plate really only a small factor?

Over the full term including interest I am looking at 1100 euro saving between new and 3 month old, is still 1100 euro and it would pay the road tax for the 4 years.

525 compared to 369 is a nice chunk per month. I can still "afford" it, BUT 160 quid a month is still a nice few quid.

So I would appreciate all points of view.

People have said to me that its the old model and engine, that I would be off my head buying one.

The spanking new VRS is rumoured to be 32000 euro.

Someone suggested I go for the Octavia 3 160bhp, that is a better engine and a new shape and that I could add in the bells and whistles, as the Irish spec is poor enough.

Many thanks

Aidan

You have this in the wrong forum bud, you should post it in the Octavia 2 forum

So you are asking new or used, Octy 2 or 3, Petrol or diesel and even Octy 3 VRS v Octy 3 1.8TSi......phew.

Personally I would never buy a car in its last year of production as I think used prices fall once its no longer the current model and getting publicity from new car marketing. Of course to offset that you should get a better deal on the runout model, and you don't have to wait months for delivery.

I have to admit however that I'm always more interested in the latest model but others are more comfortable with the "devil they know". There is some sense in that as new models can have teething problems, but I think that's less of an issue than in the past.

I would imagine posting in the Octy 3 section will probably get answers biased towards the new model, Saying that however I'm sure there will be a comment in this thread about the "tiny" fuel tank on the 3 before too long.....,

Thanks lads

Juan - I think reading the post will give a hint ;)" new VRS 2.0 TDI" and since the new Octavia 3 isn't out til mid to late this year :)

Any way, I will move this.

Thanks

My personal view would be to go new- as the car has 15000km on it and ex lease it could well have had a hard life and as you'll be keeping it for some time I personally think the stretch to a new one would be a better option. Last thing you'd want is for something to go seriously wrong with it once it's out of warrenty and you're still paying for it because of how it' been treated so far. There is the problem of the Octy III effect but that'll happen which ever option you go for.

New for me :sun:

Thanks v much for the post.

So you would walk away from the 15,000km one and absorb the higher monthly payments?

The new VRS out (this year) also makes me fear mine would depreciate by a ton and a 1/2 when it comes out! :)

A few have mentioned that the new Oct III is lighter than the VRS and pushes out more power than the current VRS? Would you have any thoughts on that :)

Thanks v much again, appreciate your feedback/.

I've had a couple of good experiences in the past buying ex-hire cars. They've usually been run warm on long journies most of their short lives (you don't hire a car to do the weekly shop!), and all the new car delivery niggles have been sorted.

Thanks v much for that.

Its a skoda rep's car. Would this make any change on your opinion?

Personally if it's going to be an Octy II I would buy new, probably because I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to taking a chance! That's doesn't meant there will be anything wrong with the other 1, just that I'd rather pay the extra than take the chance on a car that's already got 15k on it.

I really don't know what the Octy III vRS will be like spec and price wise- the new SE and Elegance in the UK seem to be more expensive but better equipped than the previous Octy II equivelent, So If that's the trend I suspect the vRS will be similar, i.e. better equipped but more expensive.

We were fortnate over here that SUK gave us the VAT back on new Octy IIs (before the delivery and road tax was added) so It was a real bargain, but the difference in Ireland may not be so big? I bought new because the deal was so good on the Blackline and the savings made it a real bargain, so the depreciation won't be so big because I didn't pay anywhere near full list in the first place

I think you're faced with a couple of choices- buy either of the 2 Octy II's and suffer the hit in depreciation later on or buy the Octy III when it's available, but it could be more expensive to start with, so you'd be paying more up front rather than loosing some at the other end in (more) depreciation, but the Octy III will depreciate too (and you may have to wait?). A difficult choice!

You've not said how many Km you'll be doing a year- if it'll be high the already 15k on the demo doesn't then seem so attractive, if low then you could take a punt on it as you'll dilute the initial 15k over the next few years? Are there any other sweeteners available with either car e.g. free servicing or low rate credit etc

Which ever one you go for you're going to loose money on it one way or another, think one of the important things is you need to see how each option fits in with your other commitments

Personally I would pay the extra and go for the new. A new car always gives that extra piece of mind, bizarrely enough if something fails, like mine has. At least I know I treated my car well and the failure is a new car snag or manufacturer failing rather than it being mistreated. Whenever I've had an issue with a pre owned car, I always have niggle that maybe the car was hammered (even if the reality is that it was well looked after).

Plus there's nothing like that feeling on being the first owner.

I wouldn't wait for the new VRS, it will be at the height of its cost (though offset by lower depreciation), think about how much enjoyment you will lose in the time waiting for the new version. There has to be value to that.

I've been without mine for a week, and I can't wait till I get it back.

Regardless of your decision you will have made a great choice, they're fantastic cars.

Thanks folks.

The price I have been given on the new Octy 3, is 27700 with this;

17” alloy wheels; Driver knee airbag ; Start/Stop system

ESC; Curtain airbags ; MDI ; 1/2 leather ;LED tail lights and Chrome pack

Thats for the 2.0 TDI, 150BHP. Elegance.

With the VRS NEW price - I am getting it for 27900 already in the forecourt in white, with sat nav and red stitch finish.

This comes with 0% interest rate over 3 years, but will be V high at 525 per month! :(

If I got over a 4 year period, this is a 3.9% interest rate and is 421 a month, but you pay them 1360 euro in extra interest.

This has a 3 year warranty.

The 3 month old, 15,000km's, will be serviced, have a full valet and tires replaced as required.

It will be 24950. It offers a 5.9% interest rate. I will be paying back over 4 years and paying them 369 per month. Interest is 1800 euro. Available at the end of next month.

I do circa 700km's per week. :)

If we look at the 2 Octy II options then the new one is really the way to go- if you can afford the 525 a month so much the better as this then brings down the difference between the new and 15k one to only 1150 (i.e difference in the price minus the extra interest payments on the demo) For that it would be a no brainer to me- you do 700 a week too so that one with 15000k seems less appealing to me mate- even if you have to go for the 4 years on the new one you'll still pay less interest back, so the difference is still actually less between the 2 than the initial ppurchase price as you'll pay less interest on the new one.

Go on treat yourself! They're brilliant cars

Its a skoda rep's car.

Isn't that what they all say?
