Wiring in an in car camera

Featured Replies

Had a bit of time today to start looking at installing the Blackvue camera from the recent Group Buy. Seems to be a good amount of info in the thread and other sections of the forum about wiring it in. However I have not found anything specific for the Fabia Mk2. I have a fuse piggy back unit but given the location of the fuse panel surrounded by plastic I am struggling to see a suitable point to connect to the chassis. Would the dashboard support behind the panel on the drivers side of the dash be okay? I could extend the wire from the fuse piggy back to there and it would give sufficient room to mount a 12v socket.

How has anyone else connected it up given the awful position of the standard 12v socket?

OK, I put mine in the Fabia a week or so ago, this is what I did.

I removed the panel in the roof by the rear view mirror, I did locate a live that goes to the interior light and this would be suitable to use with an inline fuse. However I decided to run the cable along the front edge of the roof lining, then the cable fits snuggly inside the door rubber that runs down the A pillar, when you get to dash level, with a blunt instrument you can make the wire fit in the gap between the dash and the metal of the car.

Then lying on your back with your arm reach up behind the dash and find the cable you have pushed in there, once located drag the cable down (obviously remove the plug from the cable)

Finally, I located the earth on a spade connector behind the top right fixing in the fuse box, and ran the live to an ignition live in the fuse rack with a piggy back fuse.

Final job is to tidy up the cable with a few small cable ties along the back of the fuse box and up underneath the dash I just used a few ties to attached the cable to the original loom so as nothing will fall down or snag.

Hope this helps and I can assure you once you start you will find it really easy.

Good luck

Thanks for that.

Can you remember which fuse you used the piggy back on and what size fuse did you use for the camera?

Piggy back from the rear screen wiper fuse means it is a non essential faculty if it blows and is a switched live going on and off with the ignition.

I wired in a 12v socket for my phone cradle in the Roomster last week and earthed the wire on a handy screw behind the dash - picture below.

Although not actually shown in this picture there is a handy Torx screw that goes into the metal bulkhead which I used

Jonny, is that panel the one on the side of the dash as you open the door? Is it difficult to remove? Looking at piggybacking in a usb socket somewhere for my phone. Sorry for the thread hijack.

It doesn't matter what fuse you use as the installation does not effect anything already in the fuse box, I used a red 10amp about 5 fuses in from the right, just piggy back the original fuse back in, for the camera I used a 3 or 2.5 something small.

You just have to prise the panel off. I used a flat bladed screwdriver. It is quite stiff.

I did not remove this panel as it wasn't necessary. Also didn't want to damage it.

Yes

Ideal. Cloth covered screwdriver or a trim tool

Depending on where you want to earth your connection.

I did the same as Jonny5ive a few months back. It's been fine since. That panel really isn't difficult to get off without damage!
