Top Gear mag this month

Featured Replies

I searched and found no mention of this, but in this month's Top Gear magazine there is a 2-page article about the top 10 cars of all time with 'soul'. Right there, amongst the Panda 4x4, Maserati Quatroporte, Rover SD1 and BMW M Coupe (and others) is the Yeti!

I look forward to seeing the list!

Yep. Me too.

I also had an SD1  (Not any more though......)

OK, so more details: the article is on page 104 of the February 2013 issue (number 240). The cars are described as "charming, exciting, quietly brilliant, they're the cars that you don't expect to love, but do". Also, I made a mistake - there are more than 10. Here they are, in no particular order (they are not ranked in the article):

Dodge Viper RT/10

Morgan 3wheeler

BMW M Coupe

Fiat Panda 4x4 (original)

Maserati Quattroporte GT S

Ford Focus (mk 1)

Fiat Coupe

VW Lupo GTi

Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ40)

Audi RS4 Avant (B5)

Škoda Yeti

Mercedes-Benz W123

Rover SD1 Vitesse Twin Plenum.

They invite you to go to www.topgear.com/carswithsoul to argue the toss.

My first car, a Daf 44 is missing :giggle: -BTW it had fantastic Cibie headlights and that was about it!

0-60 mph forever!

It did get me round most of Europe, although I remember the St Bernard Pass was a bit of a struggle with its 2 cylinder, 850cc air-cooled NSU engine

I've got a V8 engine from an SD1, stuffed up the chuff of my MGB.

Didn't know it was a rear engine conversion. ;)

I've been in a few front engined MGBV8's though.

I remember a few(!) years ago attending a Rally Cross meeting at Lydon Hill and seeing 2 Dutchmen (brothers I think) in Dafs beating all the opposition.

It was a bit weird hearing the revs near the limiter all the time and the cars just flying. Most impressive until someone came along with a Metro with an engine in both ends!

Fred

de Rooy brothers

Jan and Harry de Rooij.

Big transport firm near Eindhoven. They drove DAF 55 marathons and the successor the 66.

Jan also competed Paris-Dakar very succesfully!

Amazing! I think they must have been remapped to do that!

The were fired by the Renault Gordini engines, as DAF used the renault engines for the street versions.

The rallyecross versions even had Ford BDAs as engine

That's them!

I think at one time they were playing with a Lotus Cortina Twin Cam with the Daf transmission system.

Happy days.

Sorry, what was the original topic? :giggle:
