vrs knocking suspension

Featured Replies

Hi guys, have had my vrs for 7 months now and its always had clonking/knocking suspension. Have been told it could be the arb drop links but have changed them and not much has happened, maybe slightly better. Is there anything else it could be?? Also, is the polybush upgrade any good and how much should it cost?? thanks in advance! will

Anti roll bar bushes would be my guess. I used oem ones. Only £11 for the pair and a relatively easy job. Only half hours work!

Have you looked at the console bushes, they're simple to check, if they look like the image below they're screwed. Check them by putting the car on full lock to the left and checking the right bush, do the opposite for the other side. If you've lowered the suspension you may need shorter drop links, ARB bushes tend to knock when cornering but again check them, it's easier when you have the wheel off.

could be the ARB itself

Could be anything from droplinks to steering rack, they do get noisy.

Possibly anti roll bar bushes or more common are the front lower rear bushes they sit at the back of the lower arm . They originally come from factory as a 2 peice rubber bush but they get replaced with 4 peice ones which are much stronger but not as strong as the Ibiza ones which are solid rubber, or you can go for the fancy power flex ones which are solid

grease the arb bushes and if it stops the prob replace them...

check the stop collars are still on the arb

check wishbone rear bushes

I have had bushes and drop links done only to then be stumped after still having a rattle. Turned out the top mounts & bearings were in need of replacement. That solved that!

aaah brilliant thanks guys, will check all these things. The console bushes look fine to me so i'll next check the arb bushes :) and the top mounts and bearings. Great help

yeah just looked at mine, they look exactly like this...sooo just wondered if you know if they're easy to change?? i know they're not too expensive and should i upgrade to the ibiza cupra ones?? thanks again!

I've got them on mine and although the transformation from the original shot bushes was fantastic, they do introduce more road noise through the cab below sort of 1800/1900 RPM. The standard ones have been improved now so I'd probably stick with them if I was replacing them again.

aaah too late ive ordered, still, i probably wont notice too much as the road is pretty loud anyway and ill be very happy to get rid of the constant knocking!!!

Personally I fitted Powerflex solid bushes as even with a mate in the trade offering to lend me the correct tool to press them out it was suggested that it could be a ball ache and the Powerflex versions are dead easy to fit. Some diesel owners have said they get more vibration but others don't. If you are going DIY then look in the technical guides section at the guide, very useful info in the thread.

hi willmagrath,

is the noise when you are turning lock to lock and sounds like a clunking sound (like running a piece of metal along the front spring) this has happened to me and is doing on the other side, it was my top mount bearing, part no S6N0412249C bought it from TPS with vat £10.75. if you jack the car up it won't make a sound only under weight.

Ahh thanks yeah im thinking of polybushing the ARB soon as well, so if powerflex do the same, i may do that!

also quick question about the arb bushes, they seem to come in sizes of 16-19mm, anyone know what is best?? thanks

19mm for vrs front arb dude :)

I've also got/had this..

Refitted the standard suspension and drop links on my vrs a few weeks back, had a major rattle from the front left wheel....I've had the drop link bushes and consol bushes replaced and the rattle is still there, although it's massively reduced.

The car was serviced at Skoda and they say there 'play in the steering rack' could this be the cause of my rattle?

yeah ive heard the steering can cause rattles, try the suspension top mounts maybe?? they can sometimes be the culprit
