Philips Xtreme - a bit disappointing

Featured Replies

Ok it was about an hour ago and not properly dark (difficult to fit bulbs in the complete dark!)

I put one in one side and left the other standard. Also had to clean my lamps due to rally dirt lol and also polished them

Didn't bother taking pics as there wasn't any massive difference to be noted...even bent down to look at the bulbs and not noticeable different that way.

Still not massively impressed there is a great difference to warrant the £20 spent above normal bulbs

I think I'd replaced my standards before with some sets from Aldi....they may have already offered an increase over standard, but were very cheap, like £6 for set of 2 plus other bulbs.

May need to take a bit more of a drive now its properly dark to make my mind up - maybe you really have to see the light projected in the dark to really tell the difference? Certainly doesn't look any brighter white to me

Horrible feeling isnt it! I paid £30 for some phillips bulbs, fitted them and didnt notice any difference over standard!

Been there done that, bought after rave reviews and couldn't tell the difference at all :(

I don't buy expensive bulbs any more.

Ring Xenon Ultimate upto 120% more light for £20 only ones better are osram night breakers but there about £30+

Got some osram night breakers from euro car parts for £17 and Defnetly better then standard bulbs

they are indeed £17.99 from euro car parts thats very cheap for good bulbs

worth a look if you need new ones

I had the night breakers in mine before I had the projector Xenon's, were good bulbs

I agree.

I did the same a couple of weeks ago......got some H7 Osram night breaker plus for my low beams and just fitted one for comparison.

Initially didn't notice any difference over standard, then after an hour or so of use there was an ever so slight difference....but nowhere near £20 difference.

Interestingly, I recently found out that H7 bulbs are pushed hard even in standard form so the high output H7's are not much better. Apparently high output versions of H1, H3 (high beam on the Fabia) and H4 bulbs are a bigger improvement over standard bulbs.

Osram Nightbreaker plus on eBay for £10.49 pair inc P&P.

Night breaker plus for me :) they're awesome

I got a ride out later in them, they actually seem somewhat brighter when driving so aren't that bad, probably are quite a bit better than standard

They do seem brighter than standard, the common mistake I was making

(probably from seeing too many threads on here showing pictures facing headlights!)

was trying to use my eye to perceive the light coming out the headlight,

Instead should have been looking at the projection and beam pattern in darkness FROM the headlight itself (it wasn't dark enough earlier anyway, as it needed to be light enough to change)

What I couldn't see without looking at the pattern, the light seems to be fuller and whiter through the enter beam pattern...the old bulbs seemed to fade within different areas of the beam pattern

Also what makes as big impact than anything, is actually getting some decent polish and cleainng up the standard headlight.

So its not just clean, but actually finely polished so the glass is allowing almost all the light out. If you don't do this, then you are wasting your time trying to improve the light output. It will never be 100% and this can make a massive difference.

I doubt the Nightbreakers are that much different to these TBH, as they are based on very similar technology and will never be Xenons.

Also I was a little concerned about the longevity of it (buy cheap buy twice) due to some suggestion they don't last as good

So to sum up, okay for a stage 1 lighting upgrade (and relatively inexpensive), but I think the Xenons would be really the best improvement. I knew that really but not quite ready to spend that kind of money just yet !

I had some on my Fabia and wasn't that impressed. They were better, but not sure if they're worth the hype.

Personally, I think lights are the most important safety feature you've got (well, at night anyway!), so am happy to spend money on them hence why I've had xenons since (or retrofitted proper xenon projectors).

I've got a set of the Philips Xtreme bulbs and I am pleased with them overall but they didn't seem to live up to my expectations, good bulb though without a doubt.

Indeed. I'd be daft to even remotely suggest that they are anywhere near proper Xenons, but they aren't anywhere near the cost.

I think I set my expectations far too high and maybe expecting something much more like Xenons output for less.

Then again I wouldn't fit illegal Xenons into the standard h/light

The cheaper Xenon light assembly sounds like a good deal though and if I was going to do anything next it would follow suite with what others have done with the DEPO units which are basically as legal as buying the OEM projectors aren't they (just without the washers or levelling which has been argued as being superfluous to the letter of the legality issues )

These various makes of uprated bulbs are all better than standard, some are better value than others.

The problem I have is the bit where they say there are 120% uprated, which implies to me they are over twice as good as standard ones.

No the're not ...to me they seem about 20% better.

Seems to me they need a bit more honesty in their claims.

I think that was my issue with them too, tbh.

The Halfords ones (extra bright) are pretty good for my use...
