Daylight Foglight

Featured Replies

The catalogue details of Fabia Scout integrated fog lights states 'daylight running mode.'

Does anyone know what this means

I believe it means you have what's known as DRL's or daytime running lights. When the headlights are off, the DRL's come on, when you turn on the headlights they turn off unless the fog lights (which are also the DRL's) are enabled by the driver. They are located ~ 14" below each headlight on the lower part of the front bumper and use LED lamp bulbs.

Thanks for that. So they are just always on automatically. Neat.

Not nessisarily int there a switch by the fuse box to switch them on/off like on the monte

I like the idea of them being on all the time. Road presence.

Most skodas with fogs since 09/10 have the DRLs .

And any new car designed in 2012/13 (someone will correct me) will have to have DRLs as part of European law.

This one has passed me by. I have only every noticed volvos having daylights before, and I always thought that was because they ran on some ancient dynamo type affair. I shall pay more attention, see what other cars i notice with this.

Plenty of new cars might have DRL's fitted.

Only 'New Type Approved cars' from February 2011 were required by EU Regulations to be fitted as standard by the manufacturers with DRL's.

*Fabias are not type approved after Feb 2011, so were not legally required to have them fitted, Skoda just had them fitted already.*

Then these do not need to be kept activated by the driver in the UK to be on during the day.

ie

no legal requirement for them to be on/working, but where they are, the brightness must reduce when the Sidelights & headlights are switched on.

On the likes of the mk2 vRS, the DRL's become the sidelights when the sidelights are required, just dimmer than as DRL's.

One on the right or left also acts as a 'parking Light to the front..

(no Fog Lights fitted to the vRs by Skoda)

Thanks George, the Scouts foglights look to be positioned much the same as the vrs so i guess function in the same way.

I guess there isn't a great volume of cars on the road yet that were approved post feb '11 so might explain why i've not noticed.

Tbh the following vehicles have DRLs

Ford focus

Mondeo The s-max and more

The whole skoda ranged fitted with fogs

DS3 citroen

These are the ones stright of the top my head

Audis

Vws

Mercedes

Vauxhall

There loads out there comman place at the moment most manufactures started around 2009 onwards.

The differences are where they are fit for example

The likes of Audi VW and Mercedes add them to headlight unit.(could be confused as a sidelight if u not paying attention but the are brighter then side lights

Ford Citroen and Octavia VRS have LED strips separate from the headlamps and fogs

And other like skoda us in the Foglamp, (like the VRS/scout they are dual purpose or on the other models its a separate bulb on the out side of the fog one)

Hope that makes sense lol

So do all those cars you listed have the light on during the day? I have never noticed. I thought i was automobile-observant too

Probley more even some vans and trucks also have them

I always thought that DRL's were an another safety affectation by Volvo drivers. But I was pleased to see they are fitted to my Jan 2013 Fabia Elegance just like the red Monte pictured above. The switch is behind the fuse cover in front of the drivers knees. The supplied bulb is a filament bulb (not LED). The DRL's go off on switching on side lights or headlights.

BTW the foglights fitted are a good deal brighter than the DRL's.

I dont plan to use them at present in case I'm regarded as a sanctimonious **it or a failed Volvo aspirant.

Don't forget, in Volvoland it's dark 6 months of the year!!!

Tony

And the other 6 months are overcast & dull.

The Scout does not have leds for daytime running lights, but in the main headlight area there are 3 bulbs, the smallest (blue) bulb is the daytime running light and comes on when the ignition is turned on despite the light switch being off. On turning the lights on to the first position, the 'blue' bulb goes out and the small 'sidelight' comes on. Switching to the next position also turns on the headlight.

Fitting the new units as fitted on the latest Scout to a vRS seems like a good modification/up grade.

(or you activate/wire in the unused bulb in the headlights to give a sidelights and replace the DRL unit with Fog Lights.)

The vRS really needs front fog lights, major oversight on Skodas part that they do not have them.

Does anyone know if these integrated fogs/drl's are available anywhere?, my 2010 Scout has only fog lights and I wouldn't mind changing. Also, would my car have the necessary wiring already onboard?

The new Light Units will be available from Skoda because any damaged ones would need replacements.

That will probably not be cheap.

Aftermarket dual DRLs going to Fogs are available already.

or maybe just fit DRL's and use the Fogs you have.

An Auto electrician will soon tell you what wiring you have in place and usable and install or modify what is required to give you the change from DRLs on & extinghuishing when Sidelights/Headlights come on & when changing to Fog Lights

Since you have Fog Lights fitted for when there is fog, why not just run with Sidelights on during the day and people to the front will hardly be any the wiser. 'Cheap option'
