Thanks for all the Info - Looks like its either RossTech or just take help from a fellow Briskodian!

I have a non genuine hex+can cable and have used it for the past two years with no problems at all. It did all the logging etc, the only thing it didn't do was was read off the fault explanation along with the code but I just googled the code.

I also have the genuine hex+can cable which I now use instead.

thank you sir for being brave and sharing your own TRUTHFUL experience here (instead of propaganda)!

Come on lads do the maths. Would you really plug yr 10 grand car to a ten pound cable???? Please think about it....

why would i not plug a £5 cable (with DVD) to my £1k, 13 years old crap when i need to get new ABS worth £1k3, in order to pass MOT??? do the maths kid!

OK putting it that way - would you use a known stolen ABS pump to replace your faulty unit ?

i think people (especially IT-uneducated mechanics) here should realise that, pretty much every software can be reverse-engineered and in really it is rather matter of time when it happens.

Ross' cables may well have been sold cheaply by their very own China supplier...

China doesn't care about patent law.

i'm aware of at least 1 business, who decided not to patent their niche product for the fact they would have to make details public and fear of China manufacturing it cheaply...

also, they seem to be stuck in 90s as we have mobile devices nowadays and even USB hubs for them! why on earth would i want to drag my laptop to car if i could plug my phone via cable and do analysis in they app connected to their cloud?

if Ross' business model is based on expensive wires coated in plastic and desktop software flawed to theft, then it SHOULD be destined to extinction!

i think those americans would be far better of, if they released cable and deprecated this old software, but instead worked on cloud solution based on subscription model!

it would be far more fair for low-users who rarely need it while pros could pay rolling subscription.

[i expect now all the mechanics to stone me to death for this :)

Mate I'm in IT - the issue is that they pirate the cable and by-pass the protection in the newer version of software by including a copy of an old version of the Ross-Tech software. That in it's self is probably against their Licence and Distribution agreement. They are pirating their IP . This forum does not condone these illegal fake cables. FYI BTW Ross-Tech are working on an embedded web dongle that can be accessed simply via a Web Session. I suggest you check out their website http://www.ross-tech.com/

Ross Tech have built their software from scratch with zero help from VAG. They have had to reverse engineer pretty much everything. In some cases they have had to go out and buy cars to get access to the hardware.

Selling the cables is just the way to recoup the massive cost of continuous development of the software. Bear in mind you get free updates.

How would a cloud based service help you when you're at the roadside in a remote area?

I'm going to close this topic now, everything that is relevant to this topic has been said time and again on here and elsewhere.. And for what it's worth I'd rather put my money on a proper legit product rather than a £5 wonder from ebay.
