VAG COM Ebay vs Ross Tech

Featured Replies

Hi

I was looking to install a OEM bluetooth module myself and needed coding - thinking that I could use a VAG COM for few years to come I might as well buy one.

The ones on ebay claim to do everything - while the one Ross Tech ones cost way more..

What's the deal here ? Is it that software for eBay ones are illegal \ pirated ?

Is it advisable to do coding myself if I get the kit considering I'm reasonably Tech-literate even if I've not experience with Car electronics?

Thanks

This is illegal \ pirated.

Purchase an original - it is worth it - cost up how much it will cost you for a diagnostic scan at a dealers, it won't take that many visits to save the cost of a cable.

Stay well clear of these illegal clones, the software will be stuck at the old version.

With a valid genuine cable Ross_Tech releases regular updates, as well as provides lifetime help for genuine customers.

100% fake

and the unfortunate thing is the seller has sold several

why do people want to buy them, I can see future Ross-Tech cables being more expensive as they try to make them more secure

might be better going halves with a mate, works out better

I've reported it - but I doubt EBay will do anything. I am a member of the Ebay "snitch team" however not in the section where this was posted.

I may well drop a line to Ross Tech - if they make the complaint to EBay the item should be lifted.

Reported from me as well.

People buy them because they understandably see it as a cheaper way of doing the same thing. And the way these are listed and advertised, unless you're in the know it's very difficult to spot there's a problem. He even goes on about 'aftersales support' in a bid to sound legitimate.

So it does exactly What the Ross tech one does but pirated?

" Please only use the software provided on the CD, do not attempt to update or upgrade the software from internet as your VAG COM may break. Also do not forget to disable your internet connection when using the VAG COM. If you only use the software provided on the CD, you will not have any concerns."

This is the alarm bells ringing bit - basically if you try to connect to the internet to update like proper Ross-Tech does it will lock out. It is not updateable.

Oh...

Oh...

Don't even think about it!

All I can say is don't bother, not worth it.

As others have said, pirated/hacked software, cheap Chinese components etc etc.

I got one from a mate who bought a job lot direct from China for about £10 a cable, it was nothing but a PITA.

I soon bought a genuine one and threw the cheap Chinese one in the bin.

Snitch team?

Where have people purchased Ross tech lead from? direct or via a UK supplier?

Gendan for me so all kosher

www.ilexa.co.uk for me. Local(ish) ross-tech dealer

I have a non genuine hex+can cable and have used it for the past two years with no problems at all. It did all the logging etc, the only thing it didn't do was was read off the fault explanation along with the code but I just googled the code.

I also have the genuine hex+can cable which I now use instead.

Snitch team?

Yer, my name for us :)

I spent a while reporting pirate and illegal DVD's. I was eventually contacted by EBay and asked if I'd like to be part of the team who regularly keep a check on different sections.

My reports don't go through the regular system, I have a "special" interface to make my reports and they are supposed to be looked at as a priority. However my sections are DVD's and Computer Software, so not sure my report on the above will be looked into or not.

Come on lads do the maths. Would you really plug yr 10 grand car to a ten pound cable???? Please think about it....

There seems to be different cables, connectors etc so its a bit confusing.

Can we have a few links to the proper legit item please?

Do these give you information on how blocked your dpf is? Can you use them to force a regen?

Cheers

Dave

VCDS should be really classed as such. Whilst it makes changes to a car's ECU, it has to be run on a computer, specifically a Windows computer. ;) ;)

I am currently using VCDS on a MacBook Pro courtesy of Parallels 8 and Windows 7 Ultimate. :)

I have been trolling about here long enough to not want to risk using a non genuine cable, alas I still haven't got the real deal yet! I just had a look on Amazon as I don't pay VAT to see if the RossTech ones are on there............ It is also full of the knock off ones, beware shoppers!

I do have a cheapo code reader but not something that can make changes!!!

Yes, with VCDS you can check your DPF status and force a regen (i never tried a regen by myself, but i just saw it can be done from the software)
