Fabia Green Line II or Citygo Elegance 5dr greentec 75

Featured Replies

I am after a new car after my trusty mk1 Fabia VRS with 111k just scraped through its mot, got what i thought was a good trade in offer of 3k!

so i am down to two (at the moment!)

Either the Fabia or citygo, the fabia's are VAT free at the moment so by the time i spec up the citygo they both come out at about 11k

i do about 60miles a day, on my own most of the time and dont carry a lot of stuff! i test drove the citygo and was impressed but dont know what its going to be like for day to day commuting, the fabia just feels a bit dated now compared to the Citygo but its got more room, 5 seats and potentally better on the juice 83.1mpg to the Citygos 67.9mpg, i have also herd the 1.2tdi is a little gutless, i love the toys on the citygo PID, heated seats etc i just am struggling to decide!!

Any advice or opinion would be gratfuly received!

I have owned both and it's a very personal choice, depending on what you want.

Don't believe the official fuel figures.

I drive fairly economically (due to the type of journey) and I was averaging 72mpg in the Fabia Greenline II and almost 60mpg in the Citigo.

So there is very little in it, when you consider diesel is a bit more expensive.

The Fabia feels more solid, because it a lot heavier. But it's not designed for driving pleasure with a noisy little 3 pot diesel and needs to be worked for reasonable performance. But it's more flexible being a five seater with a big boot in estate guise.

The Citigo is a lot more fun to drive, makes a nice exhaust rasp and feels quicker than it actually is.

Handles well too, but it is a much more modern design than the Fabia.

For me, the one main problem in the Citigo is that the steering wheel does not adjust for reach.

As I am quite tall it was a pain and I could get more comfortable in the Fabia. So after a while it had to go.

For one or two people and if you enjoy driving, I'd have the Citigo (if you can live with no steering reach adjustment).

For a mile muncher with more flexibility due to five seats and a boot, I'd have the Fabia.

Would you not feel the huge drop in performance with these two cars? A monte 1.6 tdi 105 might be nearer what you were used to with the old vRS.

We have both in our household. I'd agree with everything Bossfox says.

The Citigo is a great little car but the steering wheel could be a bit closer or preferably adjustable for reach but the seats are better than the Fabia.

If you're going for the Fabia definitely get the estate for the huge boot for no loss in economy over the hatchback.

I'd say that the Fabia is better on the motorway than the Citigo (more pull) and the Citigo has much more go in town and will be more economical for short trips as it warms up very quickly whereas the Greenline II takes an age.

The stereo in the Fabia is a bit better than the Citigo with the 'entertainment pack' (the standard 2 speaker setup is disappointing in my opinion)

Our Citigo has every option apart from the Citisafe and the sunroof and it's a very well equipped little car. The Fabia is very well equipped in standard spec with no options.

probably! had thought about the monte but those tyres look expensive to replace and me doing 20k a year it put me off, also a friend of mine has one and he says the ride is quite hard!

I have the Fabia Greenline Hatch and love it. Great ride, corners beautifully and am impressed by the performance of the 12tdi engine. Fuel saving is great and the boot even on the hatch is not too small (you have a lot of space under the mat where a spare wheel would normally go). Most of all I love the cruise control as standard as I do a lot of motorway and A-road driving.

I'm sure the Citigo is great too and I can only suggest getting a test drive in both,

Good luck with your search.

tank on tanks i average about 60-65mpg on my GLII, highest mpg i have seen on a 70mile trip to another site for work is 89mpg

reading the forums the exhaust sensors seem a common issue with dpf's, which won't be an issue on citigo

also when travelling over 65-70mph mpg drops off rapidly on the GLII

citigo interior size and boot don't seem that much different from a mk1 fabia

but citigo does appear to have less sound insulation, so in wet weather lot of noise from spray etc in wheel arches

yes the GLII does take ages to warm up and that realy hurts the short run MPG, it is very noticable from the lack of full heat from the heater for nearly 10 miles when temp is down to 0 degrees but due to lack of temp gauge difficult to confirm accurately

I had a Fabia Scout with the 1.6TDI 105 for a day -I can't comment on the fuel economy but it's a very nice engine to drive.

I assume you have done a fair few more miles in the fabia compared to the citygo? just thinking the citygo mpg might get better? with the miles i do mpg is really important to0, my route to work is 10miles hilly B road and 23miles duel carriage ways each way. the fabia estate seems to make a lot of sense but the talk of it being a bit gutless and having to work it hard is putting me off

Not driven a Citigo but I'm not taken by it's design, much prefer the looks of the Monte we have now. I have however driven a few miles in the Greenline II and that was not for me either, a tad noisy and the long gearing I found annoying compared the the slick and smooth 1.2TSI. If MPG is your thing maybe look at a 1.6TDI would get my vote over the Greenline.

TP

I wouldn't describe the Greenline as gutless -I suggest you take a test drive -you probably won't find one at a Skoda dealership but you probably will find a VW Polo or Seat Ibiza with this engine available at their respective dealerships.

drove swmbo's citygo (60ps not greentech) to the shops and back today... average "country winding" A-road, and town, without any concern for economy, and got 56mpg....

I have tried with it, and got 68 mpg.....

not tried the monty.

is the fabia green line 2 on extended service intervals?

I also agree with boss on the fact that the citygo is a really "fun" car to drive.... a bit go-cart like

But I have done a long (3 hour) m-way journey in it, and although it rides well, and has pleanty of power at higher speeds ect.. the lack of a foot rest and steering reach bugged the hell out of me....

the lack of seatbelt adjustment was a problem too... ( we now have some funky "pads" on the belts ;) )

maybe the fabia if its ling journeys and the citygo for short journeys?

is the fabia green line 2 on extended service intervals?

Mine is isn't

is the fabia green line 2 on extended service intervals?

mine is, and seems to be going to want service at about 18.5k miles

it is set by default to time / distance but can be set to variable by dealer

i would certainly not call the GLII estate gutless, i was very presently surprised when i picked mine up as i hadn't test driven one

one interesting point, was in the dealers today sorting a minor issue with daughters monte and they confirmed there is a software update to my GLII which improves economy further :)

also i can get a lot in the boot of the estate, had

  • 8x4 sheets of ply on roof rails
  • 1800mm long worktop inside
  • 1800 x 900 mm plasterboard sheets inside
  • 2 x flatpack beds inside (seperately)
  • 2.4mtr lengths of timber inside

its like a tardis

Because of the lowered body and low profile tyres, i find the Fabia Greenline II great fun to drive. I know you can't compare the performance to a hot hatch, but please try to find a test drive in one before you decide as I have no issues with its performance and would not call it gutless, and on the dual carriageways and motorways it cruises beatifully at 70mph or more. As mentioned before, the cruise control is worth it's weight in gold. My local Skoda dealer (Griffin Mill, Pontypridd) has several greenlines on show as apparently there is quite a demand for them. Also find it a very comfortable car to drive.

I did 20k miles in the GLII over a year and 3,300 miles in the Citigo over a few months.

In the early days my GLII averaged 68mpg, not far off the 72 it got later.

So I'd hazard a guess you may get a few more out of the Citigo after 10k miles, but I doubt for me it would have been over 62mpg.

If you plan for 10mpg more out of the GLII I don't think you'll be far out.

Corrida Red, sick of having black or silver cars!

I only ask because all the greenlines I have seen have been white (mine included).

Also the fact i didn't want to spend the extra on fancy paint!

Yes, that's why my GLII was white and my Citigo red.

Congrats on the GLII estate, lot of car for the money and standard spec is quite good too.
