shock or brakes

Featured Replies

when i go over speed bumps or potholes i hear a sound like metal clanging(almost sounds like shaking your hand if your holding a few coins). its coming from the front passenger side and im not sure if its the shock or brakes.ive read on the net how it can be the ABS but i put the brakes on as i was going over a speed bump and the rattle was still there so im gathering nothing is loose on the brakes.

is it brakes or the shock? what could it be?

i can also only hear the meatallic clang with the window open, if its shut it almost sound like a rsty spring or something similar.any help is gratefully recieved.

arb bush gone perhaps, have you checked those?

arb bush gone perhaps, have you checked those?

but with the window up it sounded like a rusty spring being stretched. i had the arb bushes changed 2 yr ago left and right side. the steering etc doesnt feel loose at all like it did before and the drivers side has no noise at all. i will have to have a look and see if it is the arbs. how can you tell if theyve perished.

thanks for replying

Have a look at the brake shield behind the disc. They can corrode around the mounting hole and rattle about a bit - should be an easy fix with a washer over the mounting screw...

It makes me think of a broken spring (look right up the top at the pig tail) or a worn-out drop-link bush.

you are in a better possition than us mate, we would all be guessing.

Could be:

- Drop link

- ARB bush

- Broken spring

- loose sheild

- Top mount bearing could be shot

Jack the side up. whip the weel off and have a look.

Employ a man, any man will do.

Get this man to push down on the front to compress the springs, bouncy bouncy bouncy, be carefull not to bash your head or jam your fingers and try and locate the sound, lay on the floor etc etc.

Give the man £5

Then wiggle things around in the wheel arch, see if anything is loose :D

does sound like a bust spring

when i push down on the corner the noise is coming from i cant hear anything rattle though. im pushing it down with force aswell not softly

Alls you are doing is taking the wheel off mate.

pick a quiet sunday afternoon, Park it away from the kerb and take the wheel off on the pavement side. then hit/wobble/push everything

dude i have the exact same issue rite now! can hear it when i go over bumps and dont think its my arb bushes but ill have to whip my wheels off to see but exact same issue mate . i also like you tried to push down and shake it about a bit but got no noises. sounds exactly like someones jumping on a bed with rusty old springs!

anyhoo ill be watching this for more info so keep us posted mate!

yes that is exactly how it sounds and when driving down the road just going over slight little potholes, bumps etc it sounds like metal banging.it sounds like when my heatshield was loose. God only knows what it is but im hoping its cheap to fix as whatever it is i wont be able to fix for a while.it doesnt seem to be having any effect on the steering or driving of the car its just everyone looks as you drive down the road thats how loud the metal knocking/rattling. then going over speed bumps its the rusty springs thing.

not been able to get on my brothers drive im hoping for sunday to have a look.

Yup me too mate im hoping its not too heacy on the wallet.just forked out for tax and insurance this month not looking forward to more outgoings!

i have my problem sorted now. its the headlight self levelling sensor located near the front passenger wheel arch (only on octavias with factory xenon headlights- if you have xenons then youll have headlight washers on the front bumper). its a black box and it has a thin linkage running to it.i clamped mine in place and its solved the metal tap over the slightest rough surface and the rusty springs sound over speed bumps ,potholes etc. you only need the self levelling if you are gonna have a load of weight in the back and the front end rises.(some say its an MOT failure but if it is i have seen a replacement for a golf part no 4B0 907 503 skoda part no is 1BU 907 503 (or very similar i forget the code) the golf replacement is £30 with free postage so if it fails ill do it then.

sounded puzzling. i have a similar noise form the front passenger side. stops making such a racket when i apply the brakes over holes. just had the rad bushes done and it wasn't them. just had an MOT too.
