Hello!

New to the forum and hoping some of you can give me some help and advice.

Currently looking at buying a Skoda Octavia and there is one local to me which is a 2008 Elegance with leather interior. It looks fine cosmetically inside and out.

Are there any particluar areas I should check on the mechanical side etc?

Any advice greatly appreciated

TIA

H!

what engine is it?

First thing would be to note down the reg and ring your local dealer (being in wiltshire it will be turners of erlestoke, fish brothers swindon or the bath branch (not sure of the name). Ask them if its had any recall's completed, any dealer can tell you with with just the reg number

As far as that particular engine goes the only real problem with them is the turbo, so listen out for any odd howling, screeching or 'siren' noises when increasing the revs. Early 2 litre PD140 engines could be prone to head problems but that was fixed well before 2008.

Sorry guys its a 2005 (55 plate) not 2008 model!

Well it might potentially have the porous head problem then, but often the only symptom of that is slow coolant loss so it can be hard to detect when checking a potential purchase. Its worth looking if it has the later 'revision B' head which reduced the likelihood of problems, or 'revision C' which fixed the problem for good. AFAIK these began to be fitted from 2005 onwards so you may be lucky.

This gives an idea of where to look, if only he would focus and hold the camera steady! :

Regardless of mileage, the cambelt should be changed every 4 years.

So if it hasn't been changed yet then its a negotiating point :wonder:

There is similar in the for sale section so that could be a comparitor on spec and price(not local).
