Rear discs on non vrs?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if it's possible to convert a non vrs fabia to having rear discs, and what does it entail? All help appreciated?

i would imagine you could have to change the whole rear beam then pipe up accordingly ?

it seems alot of work to go through for not much gain most of your braking efficiency is on front brakes rather than back

I thought that might be the easiest solution to it tbh, and your right it is, but it'd be nice to have discs rather than drums haha, I know a mate who's breaking a vrs so I could get the rear axle fairly cheap from him

I'm fed up of my noisy rear discs prefer drums myself!!!

lol my rear discs arent all that good buddy they howl when you reverse if they are damp and you reverse you will be heard all around the world .... under light braking they hardly seem to be used and mine seem to have rusted a fair bit over winter got some serious sanding to do in summer to stop them being noisy under braking

I don't think you'd need the beam as I remember seeing on a drum brake model the beam axle already has the bolt holes where the caliper carriers would have bolted on so is probably the same part. Don't forget the handbrake cables will be different and you'd need to cut the metal brake pipes to fit flexible hoses.. To be honest it probably isn't worth the hassle.

You don't mention the model, but I have always thought tht mine would benefit from standard Vrs discs/pads on the front, rather than what's fitted. Strangely enough ,Skoda are one of the few makers that don't trteat TDI models as per the top end range .

All rear discs are the same diameter, so you don't have to buy ones from a vRS. The only difference is between them are vRS ones are painted 'minz' green, which can be easily done by yourself.

Hmmm il have a look as see if the bolt holes are already there then, unfortunately it's a 1.4 tdi classic on an 05, going for a vrs rep but with a few differences.

Didn't the 1.9 diesel MK1 non-vRS Fabia have rear discs?

having had both a vRS and an SDI I'd say the drums worked much better.

Yes.

just a thought would the brake servos etc be the same on drums as discs ..... my mate was thinking of doing the same with his 106 putting rear discs on instead of drums but the rear wheels kept locking under braking

That could be a master cylinder sizing issue (assumes separate pistons for front and rear) or an issue with the wrong rear brake pressure limitter (line limitter). The line limitter issue will apply to pretty much anything with FWD unless it has 4-channel ABS which monitors each wheel individually for lock-up (not dead sure about Furbies, but most Skodas have 4 channel ABS).

maybe so ... it could be a simple fix . i seem to think older fabias and base models like the 1.4 mpi didnt have abs at all? could be wrong though

Best suggestion then would be to fit discs and calipers from a known model, and use a line limitter from the same model.

TBH drums work just as well as discs/pads on the rear, it's not the kind of thing I'd personally retro fit as it has near zero benefit other than cosmetic.

Yep the 1.4 mpi Classic lacked ABS in standard trim, it was available as an option though so some did have it.
