Did try squirting everything with silicone spray before, but still got the squeak, but can try and be more specific now and maybe take the arb bushes off and squirt and put back on!

  • Luca, my first reaction was right that's its im having them! Will pm you Andrew, that's some good info mate, will ask the mechanic on Monday as gonna go see him. He did say in passing he had to get

  • hmm....It could be your front suspension springs and or the Suspension top mounts. If the springs are old that can squeak when the springs rub each or the rings together, also the shock dust cover in

  • Will definatly find out which bushes hes fitted on monday! Im pretty sure its not top mounts just from where the noise comes from when you push down on the front wing, its definatly lower than the to

OEM quality arms are Lemforder IIRC,

I think Lemforder might actually BE the OEM supplier.

Sounds like you need someone underneath it while you're inside creating the squeak. Probably only really possible on a 4 post ramp though

Febi was only the wishbones probably was lemforder.

The quest for the squeak will continue!

So after the squeak being almost constant today i managed to get to the garage and could make the car squeak with the mechanic there!

So me pushing on front corner and the mechanic led under the bumper the end was in sight...

... with one place of his hand onto the farb the squeak stopped!!!

So after all it was the farb!

So dropping it off tomorrow for new bushes and drop links to be fitted if he gets chance! So probably about another £50 and it will be sorted!!!

So for less than £700 i will have all new front bushes, arms and wishbones plus a fully serviced car and a new cambelt and water pump, which is still alot of money but IMO a good deal and leaves me with a pretty sorted car.

It's good that you've found the squeak, they do my head in too. I've got a rattle behind the dash on the 106 that kicks in at 5000rpm which is my latest quest.

The FARB bushes on your car are the newer kind without the plastic insert. They aren't that old and might just need a regrease rather than replacing. But I guess if they are replaced then you know that they won't need doing for a bit and can relax for a couple of years.

I'm a bit like you in that I don't mind paying to have stuff done as it means I can then get on with enjoying the car and to be honest that's quite a good price overall.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Remember you saying they weren't that old but for the sake of a few quid might as well get them replaced rather than greased with the thought of the squeak coming back in a few weeks.

Now its just working out if i want to spend more money out on a few mods or not?!

If you have the money, then go for it. This thread is quite good for helping you decide which route to go,

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/268760-1000-to-modify-your-octavia-shopping-list/

I was thinking of going down the cat back & suspension route before our third child came along. The remap was a peach and the car was plenty fast enough, any more power and it'd struggle to put it all down effectively. I've found that the 106 is faster than the remapped vRS in some situations purely because I can use all the power all the time. I lose out on the straights, but on a winding B road there'd be nothing in it, in fact I think the Octavia would really struggle to keep up on certain roads.

If modding your car brings you enjoyment and you can still afford to eat then it's all good. As you said, you've got a good base car to work on and there's no rush.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Thanks mate.

Yeah i would only go stage 1 as i wouldn't use anymore or need anymore.

My list for when affordable is:

- RARB

- Coilovers or springs and shocks

- Stage 1 map

Then the maybes are: CAI and good filter just for abit more noise, forge 007 if standard needed replacing, and some 18's but pretty much only BBS CH.

But it all depends on funds really, not gonna get into debt to do any of it as been there done that and its a great car as it is so no need!

Sounds mad and silly but I had squeeks when the front wishbones.................. The whole front end suspension components were changed.... Turned out that in certain places some bushes against metal require specific lube.... Could be that this has not been done, when parts do get wet the parts are moving fluid and hence no squeek....... Long shot but thats from my experience.

Ignore, i didnt turn too page 2 ;) ha

Well picked car up again this morning with new FARB bushes and arms and.....

.... ****ing squeak is still there :(

Not been able to speak to the mechanic about it yet as he wasn't there when i picked it up!

Its still bad and there most the time and now there even when wet although not as bad!

Ive got a horrible feeling its either spring or shock, but if it was surely that would mean a fault and its just had an MOT so surely that would have been picked up?

Or the only other thing i can think of is the FARB sleeve? But i don't really know much about that and would guess new bushes and arms would have had an effect if not stopped it!

Any thoughts anyone?

its a sign sam ;)

ona serious not, old springs can creak, could be the arb sleeves i guess

best thing is to take the sleeves out,and fit slightly smaller bushes to accomodate for the lack of sleeve.

cant tell you the size as i fitted an r32 arb last time, there is no sleeve on that bar to worry about.

Doh! When you say sleeve, do you mean the plastic on on the FARB? I took them off when I did the bushes myself, so it shouldn't be that. Feckin' annoying though whatever it is.

edit : Thinking back to when I did them, they were the bush with the smaller hole - would 19mm be anywhere near? Anyway, they were brand new from Skoda and I used the longer bolt trick to get the bracket round them and then put the original shorter bolts on and used a torque wrench to the correct setting. I got all the info off here. I also put loads of grease on there too, but I guess it could need replacing by now?

Just a thought, they did replace the bushes didn't they? Not that I'm doubting them though... When I had a squeak and a creak at the same time the balljoint was the culprit. Could this be a possibility? Replacing the FARB bushes made no difference to the noise.

yes sleeves (plastic) on arb can cause problems

As mentioned though, it doesn't have any as I took them off about three years ago.

ah, sorry i didnt know this was your car

the bar is 19mm ish, it i think takes a 17mm bush when you remove the sleeve/plastic as the bar tapers in here, i think thats right, again i didn't do this, but think i read it on here as correct.

no probs bud

you used the right bushes then, so it shouldn't be that!

Hopefully not, but did the garage put the 17mm or 19mm on? Can you still buy both sizes I wonder?

Also Sam, look through the receipts and see which balljoint I had done at the Skoda dealership. At the time, they said the other was fine & didn't need doing. Maybe it does by now?

Andrew, that's some good info mate, will ask the mechanic on Monday as gonna go see him. He did say in passing he had to get them from VW so maybe he looked and saw they were a different size! They definatly would have been changed, trust the mechanic 100%. Will ask him about the balljoint aswell as think it was passenger ball joint done!

But in pretty sure its suspension as i can stand there push up and down on the wing and it makes the squeak, would this make the ball joint move? Where shouts is the ball joint?

All squeaks aside tho, in really glad ive had all these parts replaced and the full service, car feels much better for it!!!

hmm....It could be your front suspension springs and or the Suspension top mounts.

If the springs are old that can squeak when the springs rub each or the rings together, also the shock dust cover inside the spring can rub on the spring itself. This can be amplified when driving. I have had this on a set of Coilovers once too. Spray loads of WD40 on the springs and dust covers as see it it goes away. Check if the dust cover is moving freely inside spring.

Also if the suspension top mount is slightly worn you can get a squeak from the intermittent play caused by car going over different road surfaces.

just a thought...

I'll put money on it that the mechanic fitted the 19mm bushes which would be correct for the car, instead of the 17mm bushes which would be correct for the arb with sleeves removed.

However, the squeak still could be from elsewhere.

I spent half an hour the other day trying to track down a mysterious rattle only to eventually work out it was the bottle of coke I had in the cup holder by the handbrake

Tracking down rattles/squeaks can be a nightmare.

Deffo fit the 17mm bushes and get rid of the sleeves. Bar may need a quick sand & grease too where the bushes mount it.
