Featured Replies

Picked the vrs up from the garage earlier and going back for the bill in the morning, list of work that was done:

- cambelt & waterpump(plastic)

- oil filter & change

- fuel filter, pollen filter, air filter changed

- brake fluid change

- new spark plugs

- MOT

- complete new front wishbones fitted

- complete steering arms fitted both sides

- brakes stripped and cleaned

- exhaust joints checked and new rear hanger

All parts were supplied by the garage.

Think that's it but could have forgotten something!

So how much do people think?

The optimistic side of me says £550! But the reality side says £700 maybe a smidge more!

Also a game of guess the squeak as the above has not resolved it!!! If i sit in the car and jig about there is a squeak from the front of the car?! Any ideas?

IM now wondering if its an engine mount?

  • Luca, my first reaction was right that's its im having them! Will pm you Andrew, that's some good info mate, will ask the mechanic on Monday as gonna go see him. He did say in passing he had to get

  • hmm....It could be your front suspension springs and or the Suspension top mounts. If the springs are old that can squeak when the springs rub each or the rings together, also the shock dust cover in

  • Will definatly find out which bushes hes fitted on monday! Im pretty sure its not top mounts just from where the noise comes from when you push down on the front wing, its definatly lower than the to

I'll say £760 and squeak from the ARB/drop links

Was it mates rates or full price ??

Is it back street or main dealer and oem parts or cheapo bits??

Not mates rates but he will do me the best price he can.

Not main dealer just local garage but family has been going there for 20 years so trusted and respected.

All oem parts or equivalent, eg continental cambelt etc.

Hopefully i will be able to make the squeak when i go back in the morning and finally get to the bottom of it! Driving me insane!

Also + vat @20%

Recon £816 all in

Do we win a prize? I'm going for 750 quid total!

I'm going with £850

£640!!!

I feel like the winner now :)

Not oem parts then lol

Like i said oem or equivalent. Febi bilstein wishbones used, all VAG approved parts.

IM happy with it!

Just to find the damn squeak now!!!

Hmm, my experience with Febi stuff it's that's it's not really the same quality as VAG parts, over time. Still, it was a lot of work, for not vast amounts. :)

really?

i always thought febi seemed decent quality?

seat for the cause of the squeak - have you tried wiggling your backside when in the passenger seat?

Had repeat issues on a mate's Mk I Galaxy, until we fitted VAG parts. Worst was the drop links.

that sucks, thought febi was oe/oe approved though?

Probably. Even so, I had to change those drop links out three times before MOT time. He kept it for another three years with no more issues after fitting the VW bits from TPS.

i guess sometimes gen from the oe supplier is the best

mbames - unfortunately its not the seat, its definatly exterior! It doesn't do it when its wet so that's why i thought it would have been one of the worn bushes that was replaced!!!

Hopefully the febi parts will be ok. As above thought they were approved parts. Anyway they will hopefully mean i font need to replace them again!

ARB bushes or lower rad mounts

  • Author

ARB bushes were done by previous owner and confirmed by mechanic as looking new, plus whilst on the ramp he gave it a good shake!

Rad mounts is a new guess!

Rad mounts is a new guess!

ARB bushes may have been replaced, but with what, and on what. The collars are usually the problem, and quite often people ignore this and fit new bushes on loose collars. Also, there ARE cases where the collar has been removed and standard 19mm bushes fitted. Whereas 17mm bushes should be fitted in this instance.

Squirt the ARB bushes with a bit of water and see if the squeak goes away.....

Car was owned by another forum member before so would say it was done the right way. Plus mechanic riggled and jiggled the ARB about to make sure and could get a noise from it!

But it still is an option due to being a problem on most!

Will try and have a look next week.

There is even a lot of confusion on here as to which bushes should be fitted. I'm not insisting that this is your problem, btw, just trying to make sure that you don't rule it out just because they have been done. You could always just pop it on a jack, take a wheel off, and unscrew one arb bush cover, and see if you can seperate the bush and see what's underneath.
