Engine cut out

Featured Replies

Hi

I drive a 2002 Octavia 1.9 TDI, which I have owned for about 3 months

When driving at about 60 mph the other day, the engine suddenly cut out. There was a faint burning smell. the engine still turned over OK but would not re-start.

Car is now in the garage being looked at. No trouble at all until now. Any ideas what could cause this ?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Could be the X relay, almost certain if no faults are logged. Located in the relay block which is accessed by removing the trim around the top of the pedals. I think it is the second one in from the left on the to row and it has 109 on the casing.

Got the car back from the garage just a few days ago and so far it seems OK, although it's been off the road for a long time. Turns out the problem was a broken valve meaning the head etc. had to be taken off and checked. Slightly disappointing as I thought these cars were almost indestructible - my bad luck I guess.

Thanks for your replies and interest, they were appreciated.

A knackered valve! I too thought these engines were virtually indestructible too. Has it done a mamouth mileage?

Mileage is 97,000 with full service history - I thought they were good for twice that. Luck of the draw I guess.
