Timing belt kit replacement

As I have got to the bottom of my water leak I desperately need to have my cam belt replaced and have been trying to for some while now as a friend at a garage keeps letting me down..

I have a coupled questions

1:shall I just get the tps oem timing belt kit and water pump or are other brands like day co equally as good?

2:what sort of labour am I looking at for the kit and pump to be changed?

3:is there anything else recommended to be done at the same time as the belt as it will be in prices I assume so acces will be ok??

4:anybody recommend anywhere in north west for having it done.

Hi, I have just had my Vrs cambelt and water pump replaced cost : £299.00 for cambelt and £69.00 for water pump and that was at a main dealer.

1. I used a Gates kit on my 2006 2.0 TDI.....the Skoda kit from the dealer is simply a reboxed Gates kit....they are exactly the same apart from the price. Don't know if this is the case for later cars though......I imagine so. I'd probably use an oem water pump, although a lot of people rave about the non oem water pumps with the metal impeller instead of plastic.

2. Depends on the garage. Should not be any more than 4 hours labour......so perhaps £160 - £200 for labour at an independent garage.

3. As long as a proper kit is used, all the bits that should be replaced are included.......Of course you might as well replace the auxiliary belt....it has to come off anyway and will only add £10 or so in parts.

4. I have no experience in that area, but you should not rule out a main dealer......they have fixed pricing for cambelt/water pump replacement....as phh683 mentions, £369 for a cambelt and water pump.....that's not that bad....when you consider £170 of that is the cost of parts.....and they give a 2 year guarantee to the work.

Thanks lads for the help just called tps and at trade it's coming in at 106.45 for the genuine t/kit and water pump which is reasonable..

Yes water pump blades are plastic, hence why people say to get it done with the cam belt as it is the plastic impeller that tends to go.

Much confusion over this, VAG don't do a metal impeller water pump. Do a search on here as I was proved wrong a year or so ago.

Just get a genuine one and you will be fine.

I can recommend Drury Lane, they have done Hunter alignments for me and have a very high standard of work.

Where are you in the NW?

Am located in central manchester after looking up the history and getting in contact with previous keeper just discovered mines has never ever been changed.. And we're on 110k so will be having this done ASAP like Monday/Tuesday depending on the garage....

Yes, I would go for an oem plastic one. To my mind, if a metal impeller breaks up, it's more likely to completely jam and strip the cambelt......I don't think a shattered plastic impeller is strong enough to jam the pump, but I could be wrong.

The plastic impeller does not seem to cause problems these days and the pump seems to be well made as they don't often fail. Although of course it makes sense to replace it when you do the cambelt.....especially as your pump has 110k miles on it.

The metal ones are a myth - it is actually a polymer that looks like metal, and that is the OEM one.
