Gear shifter linkage

Featured Replies

Wagwan fams?

Is the old type Felly linkage and the newer type gear shifter linkage interchangeable?

The petrol felly is the old type and is a bit sloppy. If they are interchangeable, should I change this old type for the new type?

I've already changed the diesel one, but this was the newer style - like for like.

Cheers,

JJ

I believe they are interchangeable, based on fact there was no need to change any length or reinforce any part, Skoda changed only the linkage design. So installation wise I see no difference.

But in order to make room for other opinions and also to bring some order in this over-discussed subject, I've searched my vault and here are my findings:

First one definition for easy reference: the shifting system = shifting mechanism + shifting rod.

I know that definition might not be 100% English accurate, but bear with me, that's how I captioned the supporting figures.

Old shifting system equipped Felicia till 08.96 inclusive.

Skoda used two versions of shifting rods for this model: the very basic shift rod with joint and the more modern shift rod with spring joint.

New shifting system equipped Felicia from 09.96 inclusive.

The new shifting rod was named shift rod with transmission.

i converted a pre face lift Felicia Bohemia 1.3 rare now to a face lift 1.6 engine gear box and front end and found them not to be interchangeable but i would just get one and see if it fits is my method. Thats why i cut my bulkhead on mine to fit the air con to it

Thanks for the infos chaps.

So, is it the gearbox end of the shifter (i.e the part that goes inside of the gearbox) the part that is (potentially) causing an incompatability issue? Is the hole for the spring pin in a different place, perhaps?

I paid about £75 for the linkage assembly from the dealer for the diesel, so I'd rather not take a chance on buying the wrong part.

My local scrappy has just got rid of 2 felicias at once, so I can't salvage one, and even if I could.

I'll also have a look under both the petrol and diesel of mine to see if i can see any major differences...

On a moot point, any idea why there are three different versions and what the point of those changes were?

Version 1 was the cheapest, but caused a lot of rod vibrations/shocks to travel inside gearbox

Version 2 introduced a clever spring joint (3) designed by Audi which solved all previous issues

Version 3 is a cheaper rod link redesigned by Skoda

Conclusion: most reliable is version 2. Mine lasted 14 years.

god knows what one i have on mine but its sloppy but have a spare one to rebuild maybe

I've been quite taken lately with the idea of replacing the rod linkage with a cable linkage from another car.

There seem to be a fair few vehicles (including some older VW's) which use cables to work a bell-crank arrangement attached to the selector shaft of what had historically been a rod-changed box - I presume they adopt cables because they transmit less noise into the cabin and don't wear in the same way.

Anyone given this a go? Or indeed any thought?
