Boost leak testing with Air line

Featured Replies

Anyone done this ??

I've read some much in the last hour,

Block off PCV hole on the TIP,don't do it. Don't over pressurize, It will do the turbo seals, etc etc.

The yanks seem to swear by it !!

I've got a tester and I had a little go with a bike pump but I think it needs an airline to work properly.

I didn't clamp the PCV enough and got a cough of blue smoke when starting the engine afterwards which I half expected.

Then it started to rain so I jacked it in.

A fools guide would be nice !!

We used to have a special tool that fitted in place of the maf sensor and you connect aitline to it and feed pressure into it with an adjuster in line,

Worked quiet well for large leeks but it not a patch on the smoke tester we now have,

Other way to do it is to have engine running and spray some carb cleaner or the like around suspect areas and see if there is any change in engine note or see if it starts misfiring as it sucks it through leaky seals, just dont spray it on exhaust as it is quiet flammable and will take your eyebrows off

Done the cleaner test twice. Trouble the mess of pipes on the 1.8t makes them hard to reach.

I've read about adding a squirt of maplins smoke in a can to create a bit of a smoke machine

I think you need an air compressor to do it acurately, but you might get away with 1 of those electric tyre inflators that some cars have.
