Black plastic exterior bits...

Featured Replies

I've had a quick search and can't find anything relevant... I'm considering colour coding the horrible grey/ black plastic trims running down the side of the car, along the rear bumper, etc...

Has anyone had any experience of, firstly, removing these. And secondly actually spraying them.

Thanks in advance :)

I take it it's not a VRS you have as you mentioned the black plastic on the rear bumper?

The side trims can be remove mate, a hair dryer, some fishing wire to cut the tape behind and then some petrol, a rag and loads of patience to remove the residue from the glue :)

Just take care that there is no corrosion beneath the side trims, silver tends to be the worst for corrosion!

Ah thank you! I know theres some glue and tar remover at work i can use at work which is awesome stuff, that'll help >.< So it's just stuck on rather than clipped or anything? And is it hard to attach again?

Just glued on the side pieces are mate, don't bother re-attaching, leave them off looks alot cleaner one of my favourite things I've done on mine! :)

IIRC the trims on my front bumper were clipped on. If you remove them there'll be holes where they clip into. The vRS' never had trim front or rear.

I had a bit of crash damage on the rubber stri on the rear of mine, so il be removing it and smoothing the bumper, i think thats the easiest way to get a clean look on the bumper rather than resprayin the rubber

Ah, so there's no holes or indentations from where the trim sat then? It is just literally stuck to the panel?

Is that the same for the rear do you know?

I wouldn't like to say for sure. Might be able to get your hand underneath and feel for the back of the clips if there are any.

Looking nice! I just don't know if it's worth taking the front and rears off if it'll leave holes :/ I don't have the time or funds at the moment to be smoothing it up

What colour is your car? It's easy enough to spray them or even a coat of gloss black will look better.

I read on here that peanut butter is good for the plastics

It's white, I suppose I could remove the side trims and colour code the front and rear?

How'd you mean mate?

You need smooth peanut butter. Put some on a rag and wipe the trim. The oils in the peanut butter break down any residual polish or wax on the trim. Personally if I clean my trim it's with meths or rubbing alcohol.
