Can I install XP pro on top of XP home?

Featured Replies

Running a PC I bought from another Brisky all is well but it has XP home installed and I want to upgrade it to XP Pro so I can attach it to my domain servers.

Both versions of XP are official.

Anyone know if I can install XP pro over the existing installation of XP home or do I have to flatten it & start again?

Regards, Mike

Flatten it.

Job done with minimal fuss.

+1, but check to see if you need any other drivers ( graphics card/ motherboard drivers such as Lan etc, AND AVG ,antispyware etc) and download them to an idepeendant place ( usb drive etc). Then at format time, full NTFS format ,to eliminate any nasties on HDD.

Probably will upgrade but a clean install in normally a time saver in the long run.

and also gets rid of any nasty pron they may have left on it.

XP Home can be upgraded to pro with no problem, just insert the disk and upgrade.

XP Pro cannot be converted to home, since it is not possible to upgrade to a lesser version.

As I remember, there is VERY little difference between XP and XP Pro, just a few network/security management tools; certainly not enough to justify the huge price difference.

Remember, there is only 1 year before M$ stop all support and updates for XP; maybe you should think of installing Win7 on your network while it is still possible to find the licenses.

cant run a iis Server on home

Weren't most of the differences simply hidden in home, and can be accessed with a little know how?

Couldn't join home to a domain though, so not much use in a business environment. :)
