1.9pd 130 diesel- not go below 2k

Featured Replies

As per the title, our 2004 1.9pd needs a lower gear to get up a hill near us than our old renault grand scenic, some times 2nd rather than the 4th the renault used to chug up in

is this normal? its much quicker when moving over 2k rpm but below that its big throttle opening and wait a bit

is there a fix, our normal runaround stuff is the school run not much mway and the occasional(twice a year) trips of over 100 miles

the air filter is clean, i was thinking of gutting the cat as it helped the spool up on my old rover diesel

p.s. it had an error code that was a dv valve, it was reset and has not returned

You have a MK1 Octy.

Could be the MAF sensor. Unplug it and if it runs better then that's your problem.

The 6-speed box with the PD engine is very long-geared, like 35mph/1000rpm in top. That could easily mean that you need to be a gear lower anyway to hill-climb at a given road speed.

I had this engine in my old Leon and you wont get any grunt below 1750 rpm and then it's all over at about 2800 rpm, but hey it's a great engine and i so miss it now, try some fuel system cleaner in it and see if that improves things...

Don't let it labour up hills in low gear - it will frig the dual mass flywheel.

Maf unplugged, now being told off because of emissions error, with the maf disconnected it was even worse, no go below 3k

When i had my leon i used to follow the seatcupra.net forum and remember seeing a post on there about putting some 'special' electro conductive grease on the contacts in the MAF, i bought some and lightly coated the contacts with it, i then slid the plug on and off the contacts a few times and this made quite a difference to the way the engine felt, perhaps you could try this without the grease and just slide the contact on and off a few times, it wont cost you anything to give it a try !..

I sprayed the maf and gutted the cat, feels quite a bit better, turbo now makes a diffrence from just after 1500rpm and the mpg has improved as my wife now uses the gearbox

the mr muscle turbo cleaner should be done on sat

and as its a bit smokey on start I may chuck something in to help clean the injectors a bit, poss atf type 1

Cheers

Was feeling a bit gutless again and had workshop emissions appear in 2nd over 2,100rpm whilst going up hills and was a bit gutless so I re-cleaned the egr(not very dirty)

and did an internal steam clean, disconnect the air inlet pipe after the MAF and gently spray water into it, a bit at a time, then i took the pipe off of the egr and did the same, used about 2 pints of water whilst my wife held 2,500rpm, left it for 30mins and went for a blast, lots of black smoke when nearing the red line a couple of times now starts and runs much better, mway run tommorow will see if the emissions check reappears

I like the way you take matters by the short n curlies and will be watching your progress.

Good luck.

Well yesterday went to london(ish) 130miles with the saucepans, so no silly driving, on the way no problems, top gear from 60-90(kms of course) boost all ok, even tried a few lower gears to make sure all was well, also when in 30-60 limits felt much better under 2k

Today heading back hit the m40 and arriving at around 70, in 3rd- the bloody `emissions workshop` light came on and power sort of waned, with the light still lit after about 30 miles it seemed that power was back, i.e boost working but I did not go above 2.1k rpm`s-hit the services and the light was on after a pit stop-but the engine felt good again

The only other thing is the fault light seems to reset after a few starts/days  anybody know which part would reset its self?

A diagnostic scan would probably help narrow it down.

Okey dokey, I`m not sure if I should be feeling a little silly or a flipping genius(the former i think), monday I fitted a new fuel filter- it was supposed to have been changed when we collected the car, tuesday we drove to poole, dorset expecting the usual get halfway u pa hill on the m/way and limp mode kicks in......but none of that, even in top at 10mph over the limit we had acceleration, also we had much better mpg
