Now I'm confused backboxes/decats and power

Featured Replies

I read removing just the muffler will lose power, then i hear if you remove it but keep the CAT it wont lose power and vice versa.

I said to myself one more mod to help performance exhaust wise, so not sure what to do without spending mega money not bothered about noise.

I had an intercooler planned, but not sure what to do exhaust system wise purely for power in anyway.

Cheers

  • This is for anyone that says you cant make diesels sound good    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLnx-Jley10     ..... i had a trouser accident

The standard exhaust is said to e good fr anything up to 220bhp! You could just decat Ye standard system which is what I would have done had I not been in such a rush to get a mufflerectomy!

Take all boxes out + remap (Y)

I had a decat and mufflerectomy and found it felt slower..it may not have been but it felt it..ive had a backbox put back in and kept the decat and feels abit nippier :D

Exactly what I did and felt!

Haha just felt like alot of noise for nothing really! Plus the noise of tickover was stupid! :D

Would I be ok to decat mine as I've got a sportex back box on mine off a escort I think lol. Seriously considering it but mines already mapped

Bit of a grey area really..some say decatting after a remap some say it isnt. Its up to you but i may be worth thinking about before you do it.

Decat and get a custom back box. Mufflerectomy is very droney. My mate had mufflerectomy and i have a custom back box and my car sounds alot more 'performancy' rather than like a helicopter.

Hmmm now I'm not sure :(

Damn LOL

It's settled! ...get a sports cat? Do they even do diesel sports cats?

Milltek & Piper do a sports cat for the VRS. Think they're around £350. Which is £100 more than I paid for my full system with a back box!

no cat, no silencers and plenty of boost

What noise would I expect from this? pamuta2u.jpg

Don't bother, that looks bodged, just go to your local power flow dealer / custom exhaust place and ask them to cut out the silencer and replace it with a pipe. Should cost around £60 with an tip of your choice.

The sound of it hitting the pavement would be something like:

CLANGGGGG!

Seriously though, why do you people even bother mucking about with the exhaust on a turbodiesel, it'll never sound good and you just end up trading power for nasty noise, and please don't try and tell me it spools up better, it's a VNT, the spool-up is controlled by the ECU which is why you remap it.

mine actually sounds alright under load

Mine sounds like a spitfire :)

From what I've read it seems that a decat can help the turbo spool quicker, so personally would decat then map it to take that into account.

As Dan says the standard exhaust is good for 200bhp

I have no boxes and a decat and it sounds great. Quiet when driven sensibly and loud when you put your foot down. No drone on the motorway either.

The engine feels smoother

I can't fault it.

Do the decat definitely.

In regards to having no boxes, i haven't noticed any difference in power, and I don't know the science behind it.

Mine whistles like a jet engine on idle but sounds good on boost, loads of people always look if I give it some because it's quite loud and growls. If there's no cat and no back box there is nothing restricting the exhaust gases so that's how it spools up quicker, makes it more free revving in my opinion for the simple reason there's no restrictions in the exhaust

Decatted dervs sound atrocious!

The only person who thinks it sounds good is the owner!

They are a joke and the owl noise is pathetic

:)

The only bad comments I've had are about it on idle but they then follow it up with that it sounds awesome on boost. Yet to have one person say it sounds **** on boost and no owl noise from mine

Mine doesn't make the owl noise either.

I've had loads of people comment on how awesome mine sounds with no boxes & de-cat....   No-one's said anything negative about it on idle either. Just that it's loud!! No owl noise either... which is Marmite anyway.
