Installing new brake switch

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had the flashing coil warning on the dash last week, pinned it down to brake lights not working, took out the brake switch and cleaned up bit with contact cleaner and wd40 in the plunger and refitted. Seemed to work for a couple of days then returned the warning light and loss of brake lights. Have order new brake switch but on searching around the forum found that there might be a knack to fitting them and that it's very easy to brake them, is this right? Or is it just as simple as pushing it into bracket, rotating it and connecting cable?

Hope you can help.

Thanks in advance.

It's on a bayonet fitting and the bayonets are different shapes so it'll only go in one way. Twist it into the fitting and then twist the body of the switch a bit more until it clicks into the set position.

I read on a vw forum that you've got to depress the brake pedal whilst fitting then release slowly as the plunger has a ratchet mechanism that needs to be set?

I've just fitted the new revision (green) one. They have done away with the twist this and that and made it a straight forward put in one way and turn. Simples :)

I Agree with tin0 get the new chunkier lookign one. I have canged many on my own and family cars, MUCH better.

Changed mine 5 years ago and even that wasn't the weird old twisty one that I've heard mentioned. Just stuff it in and twist to lock. Done!
