New to DA Polishing

Featured Replies

Good Morning, all.

I'm soon getting ready to use my new DA polisher for the first time. I haven't used a machine polisher before and therefore have a few questions before I start.

1. Is it really necessary to do the job in little parts...a quarter of the bonnet at a time...a quarter of the roof at a time...half a door at a time? If so, that will mean that the `overlap` will be polished twice...is that something I need to be concerned about?

2. I will be using `Carlack 68` polish and `Coll` 845 wax. Will there be any `splatter`...onto the windscreen from the bonnet for example?

3. This may seem a daft one, but I want to be sure...will it become obvious when I should stop polishing?

Many many thanks for any advice.

Regards.

Mike.

A couple of points:

1. Use some masking tape to show where you have been and remove residue before you move to the next section

The polish..if it IS a polish and not an AIO..LIke Carlack or AGSRP, will go clear when its been worked enough

2. Carlack is predominantly a sealer...It has no cut..So you wont get any swirl removal...Just fillers to mask them (Like AGSRP)

I always pressure wash again after a polish prior to wax

Confusion rules here, Chris, I'm afraid!

Masking tape?? how on earth will I remove the residue (presumably you mean from the tape). After removing the tape I cant see that I will ever be able to guide the spinning pad exactly down the line where the tape used to be so there is still going to be a little overlap and twice polished area?

I thought `Carlack 68` WAS a polish...all-be-it a cleaner and sealant too. I'm expecting to remove the minor swirls I have using the Scholl S17+ you recommended. So, after that, if the Carlack isn't the `polish` to use, can you please recommend one?

Thanks for the tip regarding pressure washing after polishing. I'll certainly do that.

Regards.

1. yes it is necessary to do them in small sections you can break down the polish easier and quicker, i wouldn't be worried about the overlap as you are unlikely to remove anything of concern that will deem a problem.

2. Carlack68 is the brans you have said what of the brand you have they do alot lol they do wheel cleaner, shampoo, glass sealant, cutting pastes and fine cutting pastes.

if the Carlack says "Complete" on the bottle it was also knows ans Klasse AIO so its an all in one cleaner polish sealant and a bloody good one at that.

Depending on your speed of the machine, i would apply a small amount pf Carlack to your polishing pad dab it over the panel then start at speed 2 to spread for 4-5 passes then up to 5 for 3-4 passes.

With Collinite i would apply by hand, but if you must with a machine then apply some wax to a waxing pad dab around again then speed 4.

3. if using a proper polish such as Menzerna then yes the polish will go from white to a clear oily film.

Thanks, Grizzle (Love to know where that name came from!)

Yeah its `Carlack 68 Nano Systematic Care` that I've ordered.

Being as neither you or Chris mentioned the `splatter`, I'm going to assume its not a problem.

Are polishing to remove swirls Mike?

If so, Carlack will have to worked very hard to remove them..The 'cut' is only slight..more designed to clean paintwork, rather than remove scratches and swirls

I did mention splatter/dust..I pressure wash afterwards

No, Chris, I'm polishing because I like doing it and seeing the results. I'm assuming that once I've removed the swirls with the Scholl S17+, I will not need any more `cutting` and the `Carlack 68 Nano Systematic` will be sufficient.

Yeah, I was forgetting that the post pressure wash will remove any splatter.

OK..You didnt mention S17 in your thread starter..Apologies

yes the carlack will refine the finish also known as jewelling the paint.

then Collinite over the Carlack

I use blue 3M 3434 low tack masking tape to ensure I don't damage any paint.

If it's your first time using a machine try and find someone local to show you how, or have a read here http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/index.php
