PD130 tip help

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Total noob here. :)

Currently looking for my first Superb and I have my eye on an 04 pd130 tiptronic elegance. Two things are worrying me. The tiptronic box and the 0-60 time. I'll be hopefully having a test drive soon but the car's a long way from me so can anyone tell me, is the tip box reliable (car has full history) and are the cars ok on the move torque wise? I'm mainly motorway so its in gear shove I need.

thanks in advance.

Hey Dean,

Without sounding unfriendly towards a newcomer, have you had a look through this section of the forum? Because there's a load of stuff on the topic you're asking about.

Search for the word "remap" if you're interested in 0-60 times and motorway grunt. ;)

I purchased my 04 PD130 TipTronic in December from a dealer and up to now it's been great. You'll get roughly 400 miles to a tank and although you won't be leaving cars behind at the lights it's fairly quick for such a big car. As for reliability just search the Auto Trader for tiptronic Superbs, Passats and A4's where you'll find loads with 120k upwards. For mainly motorway miles and because of the cars size, for me it was the only choice really.

400 miles to a tank :o that's shocking! Is it that much of a difference from manual to auto. My manual 1.9 remapped will leave things behind at the lights. And I can easy get 700 to a tank.

The 1.9 is great I've tried many diesels and this is the first that's stuck and converted me from a petrol head.

Just arrived home after a 100 mile trip and this is my MPG on Eco remap travelling at 55 all the way.

What's a Eco remap??

When I fill it up the computer tells me it will cover 495 miles and they are never accurate so 400 seems about right to me. I only use the car around the town so I suppose just motorway driving would get me closer to the 500 mark.

I have a tiptronic 1.9PD standard 130; I do 2 55 mile trips a day (A road / dual carriageway, but quite a few roundabouts etc), plus town driving at the weekend. Without being careful (70MPH where I can, accelerating boldly) I get about 480-500 miles with an average on the computer of 41MPG. Without the town driving it would probably be up to 45-46MPG, and close to 50 if I drove like a saint.

With a remap, shouldn't you factor in the negative costs from the extra clutch / DMF wear you get (just quoting MPG isn't very useful if the clutch lasts less?). Also, I'm not sure remaps are advised on the tiptronic box (due to the cost you'll incur if you eat the box?). At the end of the day, if they could get an extra 10-15% out of the economy figures _without compromising anything else_ surely they'd have done it at the factory?

I'm pretty sure the way I drive to get 75MPG isn't going to harm the clutch, not once did I exceed 1800 rpm and once on the M65 I stayed at 55 for over 80 miles. No they wouldn't have done it at the factory as it incurs extra MPG when driven in their tests, extra CO2 emissions, higher BHP, which means higher costs to the insurer.

Saying if they could do that from the factory why didn't they, basically voids the massive car tuning imdustry completely.

An Eco remap driven sensibly will not have any affect on the clutch. And 75 is a 50% increase over 50, that's an awful lot.

What's a Eco remap??

Eco remap, blanks out the EGR valve, and remaps the engine for highest possible economy.

Just a remap like any other butoptimised for economy not power.

Bit a of a noob me but what's the theory in blanking of the egr valve??

Can't you just Eco remapp it without doing this??

EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases through the engine. And yes you can just remap it without blanking it.

As a wise old man once said. 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it'.

As a wise old man once said. 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it'.

Did he say it whilst sat in a cave, wearing animal skins just barely eking a living on the brink of survival? You know, while the rest of us live in nice warm houses, insulated clothing, good diet, better health and leading lives which allow to follow other pursuits rather than just procuring our next meal?

If something can be improved upon, with little or no drawbacks, why not do it?

A case in point would be the EGR valve, which is I believe what you were commenting on. I too have blanked my EGR valve off and I also get somewhere near 700 miles per tank if driven carefully on a combined run of urban and a-roads. I'm not keen on my engine burning dirty air and sooting itself up. I've had 800 from a full tank of juice before now on long runs.

edit: Added photo. Random 100 mile round trip with a performance remap.

No. I was recommending the Superb Tiptronic to a newbie and trying to be informative. This post has gone from shall I buy one to removing parts from engines to improve MPG. Surely that's for another post isn't it.

All I was getting across is that in my opinion with a few improvements adding to around £125 in my case and I've got best engine I've ever had. I was just showing another option, the manual so the OP could compare. If he wants an auto, then fine it'll still be attached to a damn good engine.

And as for if it isn't broken don't fix it.

I suggest you walk wherever you want now as walking wasn't "broken" but some genious improved on it with the wheel, and it kept on improving until it could be improved no more, voila the Superb 1.9 130 elegance :)

Not really. You mentioned MPG figures around 400 miles per tank. The OP is likely to assume all 1.9s do similar.

Just when you said "if it's not broken, don't fix it", it sounded like you were suggesting that by remapping an engine you were doing something unnecessary. A fair few people remap the PD engines with little or no ill effect. I wasn't trying to slam you or sound sarcastic, just offering a different point of view.
