Featured Replies

hi all as you are aware my diff has shat itself so im looking at quaife diffs im not sure wat one to get these codes come up

O2A

O2J

O2M 2WD TRANSMISSION

will it work with 5 speed

I hid your duplicate thread :)

Octavia vRS is 02J transmission, 5 speed.

What year is your car?

From your other thread I see it's 2002. This is good as they changed one of the cog sizes in 2004 by 1mm which affects the diff you can fit. It's a nightmare for me as my car was built in the month they changed it.

So yours will have the 114mm version.

I'm going to buy a Wavetrac diff once they manufacture a 113mm one for me.

so o2j then will i notice difference my gear box is apart al ready lol

Thought the diff usually destroys the gearbox casing when they self destruct? Or is that one of the urban myths?

The 113/114mm dimension is the internal diameter of the big final drive cog that bolts to the diff (well it's riveted to the stock diff).

But it changed 1st April 2004 so you're safe. My gearbox was manufactured April 15th 2004. You can tell the date from codes stamped on the gearbox.

VW has made a suppression to the 02J 5-speed type transaxle. As of Vehicle production date March 01 2004 the stock differential ring gear diameter has been reduced from 114mm to 113mm to allow for a larger rivet.

Stamped on the top of my gearbox is EHA 15034 37 0686

EHA is the ratios

15/03/4 is manufacture date

just been told my crown wheel and pinion are in a bad way are they part of the diff or gearbox

Mine didn't ..... Although i was only just pullin gof very slowly when it let go, I would imagine at speed anything could happen.

Sorry to drag this thread.

Just curious, but i've bought a replacement box for my vrs, which has come from an 04 plate car (registered start of may 2004), so if for argument sake it turns out to be 113mm and I later kill the gearbox (lets say I loose 4th gear as an example), could the diff be transfered to an earlier box, or will it not fit ?

Forgot to add, is there a typo in the above ?

You said your gearbox was made 15th April 04, but the code shows 15th March 04 ?

EDIT: Just been out and checked my replacement box, and the code is EHA 02024 on mine, so I guess that confirms it's the earlier 114mm crown wheel :(

... could the diff be transfered to an earlier box, or will it not fit ?

Nope

My understanding is that the bolt holes round the diff flange will be wrong size

Glad I asked the question know, as I was thinking it should work fine, and the only difference is the internal diameter of the crown wheel, but the overall dimensions would be the same once bolted together.

But i'm not that clued up on gearbox's.

Thinking about it further

What's wrong with your newer box ?

If you're going to split the boxes anyway, wondering if the two can be combined

eg leave the diff attached to its current fifth gear cog wheel

My gearbox in the trackcar is dead, it has a big hole in it, where parts of the diff wanted out lol.

So I have bought a 2nd hand box from a 2004 car, and i'm considering replacing the diff with an LSD before I fit the box.

But i'm thinking ahead (as these diff's are not cheap), I don't want to spend £900+ on a diff, only to findout if the gearbox ****s itself (as in the example above) at a later date, i'd then have to track down another box from an April 04 onwards car.

But it seems the replacement box i've picked up is an earlier box anyway (feb 04), and now i'm gutted as I found a supplier with 2 diff's avaliable on the shelf but there for the later April 04 onwards box's lol.

7 - 21 days for the diff for my box and thats then cutting it fine to have the car ready for the next trackday on 20th July.

... 21 days for the diff for my box ...

I'd assumed you already had the diff ;)

You've got a few days to hunt down a older box if want I guess

The box I have is the older box, so upto 21 days to get a diff for it.

If it was the newer box, then I could have had a diff in my hands by wednesday this week.

All too confusing - I need more tea !

I guess one way or another, if you really can't be patient

you either need to get a box to fit the diff;

or you could see if one of the other diffs was available now to fit the box you've got ;)

Ok another question.

Does the gearbox casing need any modification to fit wavetrac or is it a straight fit ?

No modification
