Police paying for repair :)

Featured Replies

My insurance policy clearly states that a windscreen claim will NOT affect the NCD

As already mentioned - classed as a claim but does not affect NCD

I would rather not involve insurance too, be good to know from our more educated insurance people here, if you replace the windscreen and bring receipt to Police obviously they wont just have some big petty cash tin for random peoples windscreens. Will they pay it out as a claim themselves against all the details inc owner and vehicle and would this information then be searchable but normal insurance companies later?

No, I was told they would pass this to the relevant department and was paid from their public liability insurance.

I was told I would receive a cheque in the post.

I don't think there is any link to motor insurance - they didn't even ask for my reg plate :)

SWMBO got a crack on her screen a few weeks before her insurance was due for renewal. We debated whether to go through insurance or not, so we put it through a few comparison sites. Declaring it didn't affect the best quotes at all.

Windscreen repair/replacement is a class of claim in the search so they absolutely do expect you to declare it as such.

I would certainly not risk the insurance being voided because of it. When we bought the insurance the salesperson said 'oh you have a claim, ah its a windscreen so thats fine'.

Ehem!! Am I not educated enough!? :p

Oh right ;) well commercial insurance that the police will have isn't my forte, however all insurers share info on the CUE database so they can pick up what claims everyone has had. Now I would assume the police would go through either their own fleet insurance for the cars or some sort of public liability to pay back OPs costs for windscreen repair or replacement, but it's whether they take any details as to whether it'll be searchable. Now do remember the police have access to the MID so they could probably find out everything they need to know from your name and address.

At the end of the day it's a windscreen claim. It won't affect your no claims bonus (unless your insurance company is a rip off merchant!) And 9/10 companies it won't affect your premium, and even if it did you'd be looking at a relatively small rise. Personally I'd notify your insurance company, plus if they haven't had to do anything they'll put it on the database as "information only" which basically means they've made no payout.

Well, finally had it repaired yesterday :)

It had to have a new screen due to the type and locations of the chips.

I originally asked Autoglass for a quote, but they were most unhelpful. Didn't seem interested when I drove to their yard. They verbally quoted £620, when I asked for a written quote it came down to £423!

Anyhow I rang Audi, they quoted £430 with a courtesy car for the day with guaranteed original parts. They also were very friendly (shock, horror.... a friendly Audi dealer!)

Deal done over to Audi yesterday. They gave me a brand new 13 plate A4 2.0tfsi S-tronic (Sportline with 19" Rotor Alloys) to bum about in, very nice car.

When I returned, the service assistant (Laura) gave me the invoice - the price was now only £360, they had knocked off £70. I Asked why and she said they managed to get the part cheaper. Very nice, knowing they had already agreed a higher price.

So all in all a good job. One niggle, the invoice said 'includes wash and interior clean'. This wasn't done, but TBH I would prefer it that way anyway. I like washing my own cars!

So just to send the invoice to the Police now! lets hope they honour their verbal agreement.

That seems a lot of money for a windscreen, is this the normal price?

Fairly normal these days yes.

I thought it would be more actually, but not for any other reason than a stab in the dark.

Price was £300 for screen & £60 fitting :)
