Yeti 170 mile muncher?

I did a flyer last night from Cairn Ryan to Stoke on Trent, the ship from Belfast docked at 18:30 and I was on the road by 18:45, I stretched the elastic band really tight and the Yeti put a huge smile on my face across the A75, cornering, overtaking (when safe to do so) and enjoying the coast road and very nice sunset, eventually got to the M74/M6 and set the cruise control and did not touch anything other than the steering wheel until I got to junction 15 on the M6 for Stoke, my stats were pretty impressive, however MPG was poor.

The RANGE is showing 410 miles, this is because I filled up with £90 just before I took the video.

That must have been one hugely enjoyable journey on that route, to do the speed you did and no wonder you only got 36.3 mpg. (envy ) :giggle:

I'm sure they were! Pretty good consumption all considered I'd say.

Interestingly your fuel economy was almost the same as me the other day.

Only I was towing a 500kg trailer which for a qurater of the trip was near the 2000kg max limit for the 170 4x4 with a large boxy vehicle on it in high winds.

I took the Audi to the scrap yard last weekend on the trailer, it was a 30 mile trip, the gross was 3.300 kilos, when the big machine grabbed the roof of the Audi and I ran back over the scale, Yeti and trailer was 2,020kg, making the Audi 1280kg, my mpg was 36.

On the whole I find the Yeti the most versatile car I have ever had, it is great on "A"&"B" roads, it will sit all day long on the motorway, it tows well, even leaving some cars behind when puling away from the traffic lights, even with the trailer on, it has to be my favourite car for ticking all the boxes.

When you bear in mind I have had, Audi A4, BMW 5, BMW 3, VW Passat, Landrover Defender amongst many other cars. I am looking at what will replace the Yeti and so far it is a Yeti.

How I feel too James. It sure is a versatile vehicle.

leisurely drive across to Weston-Super-Mare today.

Average speed was about 50mph.

It was fun watching the long continual queue of traffic in the outside overtaking lane, travelling at well over 80mph at times, about a car length behind each other. Not really surprising there are big multi car pile ups when something goes wrong. (The other 2 lanes at times were quite clear-but you know that) :lol:

The best bit was the 48mpg it recorded. And that included the congested M25 and the far worse M4 approaching the M5.

Even the CR140 (ish) DSG is a great mile muncher. Just realised I got out at the other end and just carried on with life as if I hadn't just driven for 21/2 hours :lol:

Easy to get over 50mpg out of the 170 if you drive it under 65mph.

Sadly at 80mph on the motorway you will be lucky to see 40mpg.

my average over the last 3500 miles with lots of motorway driving is 41.5, just cant help enjoying that 170 oomph!

I find it amazing how many people in Yeti's get better fuel economy than my scout while driving faster and in colder conditions.

I did about 1900km last week, average of 6 litres/100km (47mpg). Average speed around 84km/h. Temperatures mostly 18-20C. Some rain and 11C.

2.0pd, remapped for economy (EGR shut down, injection timing advanced). 6sp manual.

Maxidot was 6% over-optimistic, calibrated via VCDS, but the remap has altered it again, I'm still working on the 3 tank average for re-calibration.

The OP questioned whether he would be spending a lot more money on fuel when driving a Yeti in a 'spirited' manner. The sheer volume of replies clearly indicate that both the 140 and 170 oil burners provide good mpg figures when driven at legal limits but these drop considerably when speed is increased to 80mph plus.

I believe that there are many cars on the market that can provide Olibluegoat with cheaper fuel usage for high speed travel but that is only one part of the equation. Other vehicles costing the same as his 'chosen' Yeti would depreciate considerably more - once this is taken into consideration it would reduce the fuel cost differential quite considerably.
