Crankshaft sensor P0322

Featured Replies

Hi, just had an issue with my 03 plate 1.2 Fabia. Got a shock when driving normally and then massive loss of power. Had to pull over using hazards and felt as though engine about to jump out of engine bay. Switched engine OFF and then restarted, saw CEL (P0322)and engine unstable. Thought must be a coil pack. took the car to the workshop and checked using DynoScan. Scanner indicated issue with both Camshaft and Engine speed sensor. Replaced the Camshaft sensor(located on top of engine above cylinder 3), the Camshaft error cleared. Started the car Engine still possessed like a wild banshee, replaced the engine speed sensor (Crankshaft Sensor). Started engine still had issues (now getting hard to start). Decided to check the wire for Crank shaft sensor to ECM. Removed the plug and saw what looked like oil, smelled the suspicious liquid NO smell looked like water. Using a air line cleaned out connector (massive amount of water blown out!!!!). Re-connected connectors both side ECM and sensor. Started engine....PERFECT!!!!! CEL cleared.

The Crankshaft sensor is located on the rear of engine block by the inlet manifold behind cylinder 3. It is very awkward but can be accessed with persistence (will get a stiff neck!!!)

I thought the crankshaft sensor was roughly halfway down the rear of the engine, close to the gearbox side?

When you removed the torx bit did the sensor pull out sideways if you know what I mean?

I might be wrong but just checking.

Does anyone know if this would work on the pd130 engine as well? i have similar symptoms and have replaced a few sensors but its still hard to start :(

The Crank Shaft sensor is held in with a 5mm Hex key NOT Torx on my Fabia (AWY engine). Yes you are right the sensor is near the gearbox at the back of the engine and slides out towards the pulley end.

Reading about these types of sensor apparently there is sometimes a shim (spacing washer) located on the shaft of these sensors to correct the gap between the sensor and the reference point on gearbox / flywheel. This MUST be fitted to the new sensor if replaced. My version of the Crankshaft sensor dose'nt have a shim as the depth is maintained by the mounting screw position. This sensor is used to ensure correct firing times in the cylinders hence the possesed engine symptoms i saw. In extreme situations the engine will fail to start as mine did towards the end of the issue.

I suppose the main issues regarding P0322 are Sensor / Wiring issue (broken or trapped) / water in connector / bent pin in connector (either sensor end or connector end). I was scratching my head after replacing the sensor and still seeing the issue. It never occured to me that there could be water ingress in the ECU connector (as these connectors have a rubber seal in the connector).

As with any issue rule out the obvious and what ever is left however unlikely must be the cause!!!! Good Luck

Yeah, 5mm hex will be correct, force of habit with torx bits! Thanks

Same thing on my blt engine, but it had code po321 implausible signal, new sensors loads of battery terminal grease in the plugs job done ;)

then went mad and packed all the plugs with grease lol

Ok. So this morning had to deal with the Fabia again. Showing similar issues as before (engine possessed) hard to start etc. Remembering the previous diagnostics went straight to the ECM connector. Looking indie it was obvious there was water in there again also noticed one of the pins had corrosion on it (bad connection?).

Took a small screwdriver to the pin and carefully eased the crud away. Blew out the ECM connector with an air line and proceeded to check the running of the engine. PERFECT..... So water plus corrosion on the pin is causing the issue now. Decided to use some Lithium grease to pack out the connector and to keep it water resistant!!!.

Hope this is some help to others

Had a few difficult start issues since the ECM connector clean. Turns out that i had water in the temp sensor connector which shorted the info to the ECM. The symptoms were strange sometimes starting and then other times major issues (killing the battery but not starting). Today replaced the temp sensor as one of the two pins had crud on it and blew out the connector. The sensor is located on the passenger side of the engine, held in with a plastic 'C' clip with a rubber 'O' ring at its base. All well untill next time!!!!!!

Oh the joys of owning a Fabia

Hi guys, bit of a bump for this thread....

I'm looking for my crankshaft speed sensor in my 1.4 mk1 fabia 16v (AUB engine), because the electrics are going mad (rev counter, coolant temp, EML, oil pressure switch all intermittant - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d34YHi1zPg

1) am i right in thinking that the crankshaft speed sensor is the sensor that feeds in to the rev counter on the dash?

2) is this it? (see attached image)

Thanks!!

1) No, it tells the ECU the angular position of the crank, the ECU tells the rev counter what to say.

2) No, that's a knock sensor.

Sounds like you have a PCB connection issue with the instrument cluster, if you had a crank sensor fault the car wouldn't start or run.

Ha. Brilliant. Wrong on both counts :) thanks sepulchrave!!

So would it help to take the dash off and get cleaning connectors? Or do you think it will be more complicated than that?

Thanks a lot!!
