Squeaky rotating sound from engine when switched off..

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just noticed that when I come to rest, switch the engine off.. then get out of the car I can hear a rotating metallic spinning sound from the front right hand facing side of the engine. It does come to rest after a several seconds but I just wondered what is was..?

What ever it is sounds like it may need a good squirt of WD40 !

many thanks

Stevie..

Classic dual mass flywheel rattle.

Sadly it'll take rather more than a squirt of WD40 to fix it!

Put your foot on the clutch when turning the engine off,see if that stops it.

According to his profile it's a DSG.

No clutch pedal to depress.

If it only stops several seconds after switching off the engine and getting out of the car its unlikely to be the DMF surely. It could be the anti-shudder flap on the inlet manifold perhaps? The flap motor on mine occasionally makes some 'interesting' squeaking/groaning noises several seconds after the engine is stopped, on one occasion causing a passing dog to turn round and start barking at the car!

DOH!
from the front right hand facing side of the engine.

I interpreted this as the front right when Facing the engine...ie gearbox side.

Perhaps he means the other side.

The cooling /AC fans behind the radiator running down ?. I get a noise on mine when switching off and thats what noise I get for several seconds

Thanks guys for the replies..

its no big deal I can live with it but I was just intrigued.

I do have a DSG.. I don't use the A/C much at all.. my air blower is always set on 1.

I did mean right hand side as facing the engine..

what I may do is lift the bonnet whilst engine is ticking over, then get someone to turn the engine off and see where it come from.. ie see what is rotating or moving after 'ignition off'..

cheers..

How long does the noise last when the engine is turned off?

A Dual Mass Flywheel rattle will last only momentarily after the engine has stopped.

The OP describes the noise as coming from the right hand side. This is the side where the alternator/timing belt etc is -- the DMF is between the engine and gearbox -- at the other side. So how can it be DMF???

It seems you stand corrected......

I did mean right hand side as facing the engine..
