Faulty (dying) turbo signs - acceleration seems lacking

Featured Replies

OK, how do I know is turbo if dying? I can hear a slight rattle on acceleration and I don't seem to get the seat of pants boost I used to. Any help welcome. Car's only done 46k but a lot of pottering around and short journeys. Took of EGR today and it was caked with black sludge, really caked. Tried to clean it up as best I could. All back together now, intercooler pipes tightened, so not a boost leak (I don't think anyways) will blast it tomorrow to see if that's helped. Recently had a new MAF which has helped a bit, but not like the car it used to be. Somehow whole engine/ride seems rougher than before. Wrong oil from dealer at last service? No clue what to try next, need some advice.

These engines seem very throttle position dependant as to how the car accelerates. Sometimes you can put your foot down and think it sucks a little. Go out and have another play in it. Change the air filter and put a bottle of injector cleaner in it. Modern diesel fuels are pretty crappy.

The sludge is pretty typical, I cleaned mine out totally and also the manifold too - maybe that was a bit overkill but felt it was due a good clean out.

Mine was at more like 90k miles though

After that if anything mine seemed better rather than worse.

Best thing I would say is make sure its well serviced with the proper oil and really boot it (at your discretion) for a good distance, rather than just a little over a short distance which isn't going to do anything.

If you haven't done the thing mentioned on the post next to this one, the mr muscle thing you could try that. I've personally not had to on mine yet though but wouldn't rule it out.

Try it and if it doesn't work then you haven't lost anything

Been out today, gave it some, not getting any smoke at all, seems like I did clean it good. Oil level is good, but dirty. New air filter too (as well as new MAF). Seems like it's running OK apart from a few rattles. Maybe that's as good as it gets. Just remember it being scary fast before when you floored it, guess you get used to it.
