Elegance - optimal wheel size?

Featured Replies

I didn't know you could state the size of the wheel when buying new.

Knowing I wanted an elegance but not wanting 18" wheels was a frustration that added to my near 1 year decision to buy a superb.

I love the look of my L&k wheels but despise what I see as their impracticality and intend to keep my steel 16"/ winter tyre wheels on for the maximum period sensible.

Yep dealer assures me I can change as a no cost option.

I too like the l&k wheels and its a pity they are not available as 17's

But thats the way and it hast to be practicality over astetics (krap speling)

The fashion for large, glitzy wheels with rubber-band tyres grew from the work of concept artists in art and design colleges. They were glamorous and glitzy, but they make no sense in the real world of everyday motoring. Low-profile tyres are more expensive, wear more quickly, absorb bumps less well, are noisy and use more fuel. They are also more susceptible to bump-steer, and the wheels can easily be damaged by pot-holes or kerbs. As for a "sporty" image, leave that to boy racers in Citroen Saxos. When I see a Formula 1 car on low profile tyres I may start believing in 'em. Attached is a pic shows my Superb on its 215/55R16 tyres. And yes, it is a CRTDi 170PS Elegance, though I probably wrote 1.9 litre when I should have stated 2.0 in my earlier post. I think the car looks sleeker.

Having had my Elegance for a 1.5mths now and done close to 2000 miles in that time, I can't believe how lovely the ride is on 18ers.

I came from an Octavia with the sports suspension/17" Pegasus alloy package and that rode well but could get crashy quickly but the Superb is excellent on the 18s.

My wives Fabia vRS can get a little upset with its 16" (205/45/16) wheels over bad surfaces and can be hard at times. My FiLs 3 MPS with same size 18" alloys is just awful in comparison. I did try a Superb with 17" wheels a long time ago (early 170 DSG) before I brought my Octavia and can't say I remember much of a difference.

However, I appreciate ride comfort is a very personal thing and what is acceptable to one person is awful to another. I love my Superb on 18" wheels and wouldn't change them! They aren't that much more than the 17" tyres I had on my Octavia to be fair.

Tyre pressure makes far more difference in the ride as lower profile does imo.

Comparing 17's on an Octavia with 18's on a Superb isn't really a fair comparison.

The 18's on your Superb may well be comfier than the 17's on the Octavia, but 17's on the Superb may be even better still?

I don't disagree with your comment; just offering an opinion.

I did try and Octavia vRS hatch on 18" alloys and couldn't notice a difference when I later tried one with 17" alloys.

As I said it is personal and I think each person needs to evaluate their needs with their car.
