Shaking-noise when going over 100

Featured Replies

When driving over 100 mph everything starts to shakes and by the time i get to 120 its unbearable and I really dont think its safe to drive it over 100. I've got 15000 miles on my pd100 and this wasnt the case in first 3-4000 miles. I guess i should balance my tires?

Also when driving normal speed if i open my back window there is annoying deep clattering noise i cannot describe properly cause my english isnt that well. Anyone alse got this problems?

My PD100 will cruise happily at 100+mph so I reckon it may be a case of getting the wheels re-balanced - you may find one of the balancing weights has fallen off :D

As for the rear windows, I opened one of mine at 70mph and I know exactly the noise you mean - kind of a loud vibrating noise as if the window is flapping around. This may be the reason why they removed rear electric windows from later Fabia models ;) I only use them now to clear off condensation in the mornings and don't bother opening them when I'm on the move!

Of course it's not safe over 100mph, let alone 120mph. Why do you need to be doing these speeds?

I'd put money on the wheel balances aswell, same happened to my dad's car.

edit - just read your not from England, maybe its permissable to drive in excess of 100mph where your from?

Yes, my money is on a badly balanced wheel.. i had a similar problem at similar speeds when i had new tyres on.. it didnt judder as such, just felt wierd.

then i took it to another tyre place who re-balanced all four and matched them up (best two on front) and they said that previously the wheels had only been balanced on the inside edge, and that alloys should be balanced in the centre too.

its much better now:)

as for your back window problem, its basic physics, when travelling at speed with a rear window open, the passing air has a vacume outside the car, so air from inside the car gets "sucked" out the window.. and as when the pressure drops inside the car, the air changes direction, and gets sucked back inside the car, creating the noise you describe... and if its at high motorway speeds it makes yer ears go funny too with the rapid change of air pressure... youll find if you open a front window, the noise will go away :)

Erm, if he's driving a non-modded Fabia 1.9TDI - it's top speed is 116Mph and the standard spec tyres are only rated to 130Mph at any rate. Is it any wonder he's getting vibration? :D

Opening any window at high speed will create a high amount of drag and 'windsnap' - that noise you get when wind is brushing across the edge of a window and into the cabin. Not to be recommend. That's like a Formula-1 driver opening his visor at 220mph - not a good idea really. ;)

Doesn't matter what the top speed is. The car does not shake 'badly' at high engine speeds if the tyres are properly balanced, his tyres are undoubtedly unbalanced...either that or he's had premature wear on them..

I suspect the indicated speed is quite a way off the real speed. Apparently when you reach the max speed, the turbo cuts out and the car decelerates quite rapidly, eh Jase? ;) I have never hit this and when I first got the car (unmodded) hit an indicated 130mph on the speedo on my nice clear private road in South Hampshire ;)

First thank you all for answering.

My tires are pretty worn out so i'm gonna balance my tires and see whats gonna be. Fabia is designed for autobahn cruise at 100 mph, but i would like to cruise at 110 mph cause i think its safe speed and not too much of an engine load. As for back windows i cannot believe they didnt predict that and solve that problem.

It's the same with virtually all cars I've ever driven - ie you don't open your rear windows at speed. 100 mph is not a speed where you mess with things...
