Some Concerns

Featured Replies

Been on an Easter road trip, and this has resulted in a couple of queries

(1) I have what I describe as a thumping/slapping noise from somewhere around the front passenger seat, there is not set pattern to when it occurs but seems it does not occur on motorways or similar type roads.

(2) Start the car up from cold and it spluttered but a quick blip on the throttle sorted it out & then did a round trip of about 15 miles.

Left the car for about 2 hours then had to join a dual carriageway about a mile latter going up hill accelerate firmly and half way up the hill the car was sluggish and would not exceed 3000 rpm in third, pulled off switched off and after that car completed 130 mile journey with no problems. Before today car has never done this, I think the car went into limp mood but any ideas of what caused this and would an old fashioned italian tune up sort it out once the engine is warm ?

Thanks.

Assuming its a vrs?

Coilpack is a possibility for the limp mode, but until it happens again who knows. Maybe get it plugged in somewhere and see if anything has logged.

Mines is rough if I try to drive it straight away, a rev also clears it, car is mapped. Not really a problem as if I just let it warm up for a minute before driving its fine (which is a not bad idea anyway).

The slapping noise is anybody's guess, loose handbrake cable maybe? I'd just have a good look under the seat/drivers dash, and also under the car on the drivers side.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the response, will be looking under the seats to see if I can find what is causing the noise.

BTW car is a tdi

Slapping noise under passenger seat sounds more like a loose exhaust heat shield

If so is it an easy to check & do job.

Took car for a good workout and limp.mode did not occur again.

Car had recorded an over boost, so will see if it goes into limp mode again, if not it could be turbo clean out time.

Sticky turbo vanes will be the problem. Mr Muscle oven cleaner normally cures it.

Thanks will see if my hard driving like I stole it session has cured it. As I have had only one episode of limp mode before I gave the car a good work out.

My friendly local VW specialist has cleaned his own turbo with good success, so will use him if turbo requires a clean.

Slapping noise could be center bracket on exhaust bust. Easy fix with 2 jubilee clips.
