pd100 vs pd130 intercooler

Featured Replies

What's the difference between pd100 and pd130 intercooler. The second one obviously should be larger but I'd like to know if the difference is really significant. You can see IC from my fabia pd100.

Im pretty sure that they are both the same :)

Me too, and wholly inadequate for cooling down in high temperatures, eh? ;)

as far as i know its the same intercooler that gets used on pretty much all the turbo'd vag cars, just the occasional car gets twin and even less get fmic

So ive heard ;)

Looks like space for a fan in there- would it be worth it?

Anyone tried a i/c cooling system using piezo foggers yet?- Perhaps I should

submit that to halfbakery.com

(actual site btw)

Personally I am considering a fan - mainly as it will blast out the hot air. There are a few catches however with a fan -

1. It will need to be running when you accelerate really, to prevent the temp going up as much in the first place. Then you'd need it to stop at a certain temperature.

2. You still need to do the TT vent or similar mod as otherwise all you've done is move air around under the bonnet more effectively, possibly creating temperature problems elsewhere.

3. How do you fit the blasted thing in the first place, it seems to be pretty hard to even see the FMIC without taking off some car parts?

fan will be pointless, would need to be massive to have any real cooling affect when stationary but will hinder at speed. save your money and get either water spray or fmic

Out of interest; the 100pd (ATD) intercooler and associated pipes are all different part nos to the VRS system .The 2005-2006 fische also gives a diff part no. for the O/S under wing sheild on the VRS ; does it come with a vent now?

Now that is interesting..

anyone with a new-new fabia care to check? :)

Or better still, order it & see what it's like ;) ;) Please ;)

Mines '05 spec & no vent in the wheel arch liner.

I suspect the vRS differs due to the tiny "mud flap" stylee lips front & back.

I reckon this one is for 2006 model though - mine's 05 as well ;)

Didn't notice any vents on my 05 vRS either...

Whens the 06 models out?

2006? Just a guess ;)

I realise the fan wouldn't actually cool anything, but it must improve the efficiency of the intercooler by pulling more air through it at lower speeds and hopefully prevent some heat soak? I think I'd want to put it on the back of the ic for various reasons- and a wheel arch vent would be required. Don't Kenloe do a slim profile fan? I think the 05 smart roadster uses one for its ic. Has anyone actually tried fitting one or know of some tests?

I know the gains wouldn't be huge but if fans work for radiators why shouldn't they work for i/c s?

Maybe a spray and fan combo to keep everyone happy ;)

telling ya, the fan will do nothing other than lower temps by a marginal amount whilst stationary. once moving the fan will hinder the IC as it will block some of the airflow.

fans on radiators are a bit different, on ym car if i remember right the fans have a total surface arear of about 2ft square so can move a lot of air, your IC is only about 6inch's by 9inch so you would need a massively powerful fan just to equal the effect of the radiator fans.

Diesels don't get especially hot at lower speeds though - on mine the temperature gauge actually drops if I'm stuck in traffic for a modest amount of time.

Greatest temperature rises are at higher speeds, when there is plenty of natural airflow available to do the cooling, providing the ventilation of the intercooler utilises it. Which, as standard, it doesn't do especially well.

The only time a fan creating an airflow over the intercooler would probably be useful would be on a rolling road, where the revs are high but the car isn't moving... :D

Rob.

Fair points really. I was gong to mention that the smart roadster thingy has a fan but the engine's in the back....duh! :o

Just better flow required then- something it doesn't look like the Fab has much of.

Pikey mods required at some point....
