APPS and IP address

Featured Replies

Morning all :)

Im looking at getting a home cctv system and have been told that to view it on the 'tinterweb i need a static IP address or i can watch it on my iphone via an app but not both! I asked my broadband service provider (UPC) who said that if i wanted a static IP address then i would have to go onto a business package and pay over a grand a year for the privalgae!!If i can watch it on my iphone via an app why cant i have the same thing working on my PC with having a static IP address.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Just use a dynamic DNS service and connect to a web address rather than your IP.

Put your details in your router, so when your IP changes, it updates your domain. Completely free :)

Set your port to forward on your router, then connect to username.no-ip.org:9000 or whatever the port is.

Lost me there already!! :( Can set it up myself or would i need someone who was a bit more or should i say a lot more techy than me? The app deal is by far the cheapest deal and it is with a very good company who do alarm monitoring. I just dont want to get this system then find i cant set it up myself to view on the internet afterwards. Just a question but why cant you have the same tech for an app working on a pc?

What app deal is it you're talking about?

I assume you will have some sort of DVR in your house. If you can access the system on a PC, then it can be made so you can access it over the internet.

Basically you get the system at cut price but pay ten euro a month to have the APP on your fone. The system comes with a DVR and monitor and cameras. Most companies here who supply systems have said that if you want to view over the internet then you have to have a static IP address beforr they will set the system up. Eircom is the only one offering a fone APP and requiring no static IP address.

The app that you download will still require a static IP address although as softscoop mentioned there are many free dynamic DNS services available. Basically a DNS translates a domain name into an ip address its dynamic so it doesn't matter that your NAT ip address is constantly changing as the APP comunicates with the dns host and not your home network. Your Camera software will have an option to use dynamic dns you typically access the DVR through a web browser at its local IP address and fill in the settings of your chosen Dynamic DNS. Then tell the phone app to use the same settings and voila you should get a picture on your phone.

You shouldn't need to pay €10 month to be able to access on your phone at all.

I'm not sure about iPhone, but on Android there is a totally free app called IP Cam Viewer, that allows you to view 6 cameras. I'm sure there are similar apps on iPhone.

Once the DVR is setup, connected to your router, and the firewall is setup correctly, you should be able to connect from anything, with no cost.

has on option for dynamic dns NO static IP required.

I think the APP forms part of the service contract that you need to take out for two years! Rather than paying a company the full cost up front Eircom are doing it so you pay just over half up front then ten euro a month.....I really dont know enough about the techy side of so would need someone to do it for me!

K:)

look at portforward.com for help with a static ip

Thanks for the replies folks :) The crowd who will do the work have said that they will set up the dynamic DNS for me, saves me making a mess of it!
