20k clutch gone!

Featured Replies

Hi guys looking for some advice, I have a 60 plate Octavia with just 20k on the clock and at a recent visit to the local stealers I was told my clutch is on its way out and if I give the £500 they would fix it. I have looked at the forum and seen lots of posts about DMF issues. I think that if the DMF has a problem and is eating the clutch that it should therefore be covered by warranty (up in Sept) but I am told that the clutch is not covered but it wouldn't need replaced if the FAULTY DMF didnt break it, what do I do as the stealers say its £1500 if both need replaced.

What are the symptoms?

What can you hear?

Did you buy the car new? How did you pay for it? Does it have FSH?

Arnold Clark to the rescue. I live in Elgin and take my car to Dunfermline for ant work or servicing, I will not or ever allow AC to go any where near my car. They will fob you off so they get labour rates and no warranty rates and also the sale of the part. There is a VAG specialist n Edinburgh called Auto haus I think, heard a lot of good reports about them as they are always busy.

Can you blame him if his local dealer is Arnold Shark. As I said to the service manager at my local Arnold Shark dealer I would rather are my car to the zoo and give the monkeys some tools and a diagnostic computer before I would let his " technicians " near my car or van

Oh dear, Arnold Clark want £500 to 'fix' your clutch? Do we know for sure it is AC we are talking about here?

I'd rather let the lass off the checkouts at the local supermarket have a stab at it than the numbnuts at AC.

Surely if it was so bad that it was in need of replacement, you as the daily driver would have noticed the symptoms by now?

Trying to prove the DMF or clutch is defective as a direct result of a manufacturing defect in an effort to get the fix paid for under warranty will be like trying to push water up hill I'm afriad. It's far too easy for Skoda to claim you (or your wife's) driving style is to blame and lay out nice and thick their 'fair wear and tear' policy.

Good luck. I know dealers are few and far between in your neck of the woods but please, please avoid Arnold Clark.

Why don't your try the Victoria garage in maud they are approved Skoda repaired and a kick in the arse from you. Really nice guy. Know his stuff.

I hear or feel nothing different. The car went in as stone stuck in brakes and was grinding. Service manager lifted bonnet and asked me to smell the clutch burning.

Bought it 9 months old from the AC stealers with 10k on the clock and had its 2 year variable service where the bill for condenser unit was £1500

In the absence of any noise at all I would doubt there is anything wrong with the DMF. Clutch smell usually means slipping clutch, but can also be due to oil or brake fluid leaks. Take it out and floor it in 4th or 5th. Does it slip?

I hear or feel no issue driving only grinding of stone in brakes but that's resolved. I don't trust ac but can't afford time yo travel to a better dealer all ac wanted me to do was fill out customer satisfaction form for Skoda

Have you tried a stall test? Park somewhere safe away from other cars etc. Put Handbrake on firmly. With car in gear lifespan the clutch. The engine should stall. if it doesn't the clutch is slipping.

I wouldn't repeating this to often as it must put a lot of stress on the drive train.

A 60 plate car has Skoda warranty until at least September 2013 or 60,000 miles. I take it you didn't pay for the condenser as this would have been replaced under warranty.

Clutches are more difficult as the way someone drives a car can cause clutch failure, holding the car on the clutch on hills and riding the clutch don't help. If the DMF has failed the clutch would be replaced under warranty, if the clutch is slipping the dealer could argue it's down to driving style.

Will try it and let you know, could guess it will stall as I don't feel it driving

Got condenser done after 2 months of pleading my case they did it under goodwill because of customer service treatment I had from Skoda directly. Eg in meeting on phone will call back but never do I think that was the only way, but if they called back etc it would still be broken today as I wouldn't pay out of principal lol
