Rear ashtray/storage damping

Featured Replies

I've noticed that after a hand brake surround replacement under warranty, my rear ashtray/storage bin just flaps open. There is a slight resistance in the "empty"position e.g. for access to the jumbo box/armrest screws on my 2010 Scout.

Can anyone please confirm whether there should be some damping on it, or indeed any resistance that would hold it shut. I can imagine mine would just pivot open if I were to drive up a hill that was steep.

Thanks.

Mine just clatters open. Kids use it as a storage box and drive me mad slamming it.

There is no damping on mine, but there is a little resistance at the last point of closing which requires slightly more push and also holds it closed.

It's friction / resistance only and, IIRC, the 'lugs' or on the sides and may be indicating that the opening for the ashtray is too wide (or the 'lugs' are missing / damaged.

Just been and had a look for you and there is a triangle of plastic on the storage bin (both sides) near the top leading edge.

(Poor picture. Sorry. This is the left side of the bin. The top of the bin is on the right of the picture and the back of the car towards the bottom of the picture. Imagine the picture rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise and it will make more sense.)

When closing, these provide a slight friction fit against a thin plastic strip/bar I side the armrest housing.

It's not much and if the housing hasn't been put back quite right, I can see that 1mm extra gap and a bumpy road would easily cause it to fall open.
