Superb SE Estate - handing back after 2 years, some thoughts...

Featured Replies

I'll be handing my 2year old Steel Grey Superb SE (1.8 Petrol Estate) back in the next 7 days and picking up a new Yeti.

I've used this forum (passive observer mostly) over that time and found it really useful - hope my thoughts/experiences of the car may help someone else, so after 2 years and 1 month of ownership from new

Miles 22,400

Avg MPG 37.4 (although on a run from Shrewsbury to London, I can easily get 45/6mpg staying within the speed limits, and on a couple of warm summer days and quiet motorways I saw an average of 50mpg)

Tyres Factory Fitted Dunlop SP Sport FastResponse, fronts still have 5 or 6K in them, rears have at least another couple of years

The Good

I chose the SE (w. extras bluetooth and sunset) over an Elegance as I preferred the Alcantara seats to the leather; really glad I did as the Alcantara seats are really good, the best seats of any car I've owned, very comfortable and grippy.

The seats and the whole interior still look fantastic, and when cleaned inside it looks as good as new. it's stood up to family life really well.

Bodywork is still great too, have managed to avoid any scrapes, scratches and dings, and when washed and clean it's a great looking car; it looks really good in Steel Grey.

Bought the car for the boot size and space for the kids; however we never, ever needed to use the boot to it's full capacity, and on that front it had no advantages for us over our previous Octavia MKII Estate.

Kids love the space in the back though, and especially the clock/temp gauge! Think these will both be missed a little.

Performance has been no problem at all, absolutely fantastic at motorway speeds and the acceleration from 70 upwards is really strong; it feels like a very safe car to drive at this kind of speed as there is always something there if you need it. It makes it brilliant at eating up motorway miles, it's 160 miles from home to London, a journey I've done 20 times or so in the last year - and I've always arrived home feeling OK, regardless of the weather conditions; it's just a great car to drive over a long distance.

The Not so Good

The only major annoyance for me is the windscreen wiper, and how many times it sweeps the screen after a wash - I understand why it does this, but on the Octavia you could let it wipe once after a wash, and then cancel it by pressing the stalk down (as if to wipe once), this was great in winter to avoid smears rather then the wipers wiping another 3 times on an already dry windscreen!

Bolero is a little slow at times, especially navigating SD card folders, and for some reason my phone's (Galaxy SII) sat nav audio stopped coming through the speakers; although I think this a problem with the settings on the phone rather than the Bolero, as there was never a problem with connecting for calls…either way it never bothered me enough to check as it meant I could listen to the radio and have the sat nav on.

I preferred the dual climate control in the Octavia as it had .5 degree increments, and I hardly ever moved it from 21.5 degrees, and even now two years on, I move between 21 and 22 degrees to get to a comfortable temperature.

It's a bit hairy driving a car this size through North London rush hour traffic!

All in all, it's been the best car I've ever owned and I will be genuinely sad to see it go - I would without hesitation recommend one to anyone, and would have another without any problems at all. I had my 'end of PCP in 12 months eye' on a Yeti as my next car to make city driving a little easier, but am not keen on the new Skoda corporate front end facelifts and really like to look of the current Yeti, so thought I would get an 'old' style brand new one while I still could, and moved a year early on my PCP. Dealer was really good with this, and got a deal I am happy with to change.

Moving to a Yeti Elegance, so imagine I will miss the alcantara seats and the effortless motorway miles, but gain in much easier and stress free city driving, and better lights in bad conditions!

Wouldn't count out coming back to a Superb though in the future....

you might be sorry a bad move i think.

When you come back to a Superb get an Elegance!

We'll see!

I genuinely preferred the alcantara seats when we were comparing the Superb models 2 years ago, and the things missing between SE and Elegance were not deal breakers for me - I only really needed bluetooth and phone prep as an essential; had the SE+ been around when I ordered it would have been the perfect model.

When choosing the Yeti I couldn't spec Alcantara seats as it's not an elegance option (although it is on models further down the range), the upholstery in the Yeti SE+ is pretty nasty and non changeable even as an option, and to take an SE and add bluetooth etc made no sense at all in costs, so it HAS to be leather this time around, which I've not enjoyed that much in the past but we'll see how go!

Just done this the opposite way round.....and you will love the Yeti
