noise when driving with rear windows down

Featured Replies

I get a repetative noise when driving with the rear windows down at anything over 40mph, its quite hard to explain but gets annoying after a while, has anyone else witnessed anything like this?

yes, it does my head in, sounds like you are in a helicopter. i suspect the parcel shelf.

All my cars have done this. Its to do with turbulence giving a buffeting effect, you can equalize the pressure by opening the front windows slightly.

Those are sub frequencies you're hearing...it's like that with most cars. It's the wind passing in thru the rear and beating against the seats and back that causes the noise...don't worry about it..

yep, every car will do it, great for annoying passengers in the back with the rear windows locked :D

sounded like a tyre had blown when the windows are down traveling 40+ get it all the time its annoying but lukily theres air con!

Not to mention with a Fabia of virtually any type, you can actually afford to turn it on :)

My Impreza was knocking a couple of mpg off with the aircon turned off I would suspect, but it's swings and roundabouts .... more money for fuel to turn the aircon on, or errrm more money for fuel from the extra drag involved in having the windows down..

:) maybe just drive at night time! lol

but then i only put aircon on for a few mins and turn it off back onto recirculation mode so its not on all the time! tho i see ur point

I think your right, i did some messing with the shelf and it went better, surely though i should be able to put the back windows down without it sounding like i'm in an apache.

Not to happy about this one its my first fault on the car and its verry anoying

It doesnt do it in my missus 1988 escort, and if ford could get it right in 1988 then whats goin on in 2005, didnt do it in the 306 either.

If cars that were built 15 years ago didnt have this problem its a bit P!SS poor that we have it now

LOL I just asked the exact same question on the cupra forum..

Maybe it's to do with the (relativley) slippery aerodynamics of more modern cars compared to the old design of an escort ... but the 306 blows that theory out of the water perhaps?

well the 306 isnt exactly a new design but come on if you bought a new merc and had this problem you wouldnt be to happy, i'm amazed i'm the first to bring this up (waiting for someone to correct me) oh and if my spelling isnt to good today it might have something to do with the beer not the lack of education!!!!!!!!

Its to do with how well the car is cutting through the air in the first place and occurs on quite a number of cars. Try opening a front window just a touch and it will probably go away...
