Central locking & door microswitch issues

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I hope you can help me with some problems I'm having with central locking and door microswitches. (Apologies for the long post, but there's a lot of info to get across!) I'm not sure if it's one or two problems or several which intermingle.

1. Door microswitches

  • Interior light does not come on when driver's door is open.
  • Headlight chime does not sound when driver's door is open.
  • 'Door open' symbol does not appear on dashboard.

I suspected a faulty microswitch in the drivers door.

But I noticed the chime and, door open symbol do not operate for the other doors. However the interior light does come on for the rear left door, so the microswitch on that works. But still no chime or door-open symbol.

I've never heard the chime at all. Tried driving off with the handbrake on but it didn't chime.

2. Tailgate & central locking

Tailgate does not always release cleanly; sometimes requires one person to pull up on the tailgate while another operates the release lever by the driver's door. After spraying the lock with WD40 last week, it seemed to work nicely for a couple of days.

Central locking operates apparently at random. Sometimes it locks the car while I'm sitting there or driving along the motorway. Sometimes I just hear the clunk but it doesn't lock it.

When using the lock button on the driver's armrest. passenger lock is seen to go down, but pops back up. All other locks stay down. When the key is used in the driver's door, all locks operate normally.

After a week, remote key fob no longer operates central locking (I suspect it's the battery, just need to work out how to prise it open). Luckily, the key still works in the driver's door and locks/ unlocks all doors as expected.

I'd like to get this fixed, but it seems like a lot of problems. Can it really be that I need to replace the microswitches on both front doors AND the buzzer AND fix the light on the dash?

As far as the central locking is concerned, I popped into a local garage and they quoted £120ish to replace a solenoid in the door (but they didn't say which door). That would be expensive if it didn't work. To be honest, its quite expensive even if it does work.

My priorities are getting the tailgate to open cleanly and getting the headlight chime working.

Thanks

i would start by testing / replacing the door switches as they could also be causing your central locking problems. on the vrs the doors lock when you get above 10mph so maybe your doors are not locking when they should because the car thinks a door is open etc ....

as for the boot it may just be a case of giving the cable a good clean / oiling .... and adjust it as cables stretch over time .

Thanks.

I take it the tailgate cable is adjusted at the boot end, rather than the drivers' end?

How to change the remote battery is on page 30 in the manual - if you don't have the manual you can download one from here:-

Interesting. My manual is slightly different, and doesn't even mention how to change the battery.

Anyway, I worked it out. I was trying to prise the key apart in the wrong direction (well, it made sense to me...).
