Where is the CAN gateway?

Featured Replies

Just replaced my dead OEM Columbus RNS-510 HU with an eBay unit and want to know whether I'm at risk of battery drain. I've read all the threads about gateways and so forth and, to be honest, I'm not much the wiser because I've no idea whether a CAN gateway is a physical part of the unit, a physical part of the car or some sort of firmware coding.

I understand the battery drain problem was on 'earlier' cars. Does that really mean 'earlier' HUs? Is my MY10 (June) Superb early? Is my HU is 3T0035680A/H42/2724/March 2011 early?

Was the problem fixed by a modification to the car, or to the HU, or to the firmware? In other words, would ANY new car be safe from drain, irrespective of HU or will certain HUs cause drain in any car, new or old?

Finally, if I do have drain, can it be fixed?

Please forgive the basic questions.

Thanks

The CAN gateway is a separate box to the head unit. Its only older cars (2006 or earlier i think) that needed any modifications and these modifications came in the form or either upgrading the gateway or applying a special firmware to the headunit. You will be ok as your car is new enough not to need the gateway changed.

Thanks for the info. So the fact that my battery went flat after installing the new unit is more likely to be coincidental than a gateway problem, then, yes? I think probably the battery's just knackered, because it was flat when I got the car last weekend, and had probably been sitting around on the auction site that way for a while. I doubt that did it much good. I'd been playing around with the MFD menus for an hour or two as well, and that probably saw it off. I think I'll get myself a 77Ah job, anyway.
