I'm going to do the deal tomorrow after taking out a Fabia mk1 Vrs for a nice spin. It felt a bit weird at first as it's got 70bhp less than my mighty Octy. Sadly the Octy does have to go as the running cost is too high. 90% of my driving is urban so my mpg is low to mid 20's. I've been offered 5.2k as a part exchange for the Fabia which sounds like an ok deal, would have liked more but don't we all? Full service/History. It has a small stone chip on bonnet, rear spoiler needs to be resprayed too and paint has bubbled up on alloys. The salesman will repair all this in the price. Does this sound like a good deal anyone? Also does anyone know why paint might be bubbled up on alloys? Please give me your opinions thanks. :)

If you want comments on how good the deal is you'll need to tell us a bit more about each car (age, mileage, history, price). As for the alloys bubbling up it's fairly common, and not just with VAG cars.

Be careful with the alloy refurb. I spent much of the summer in 2011 doing forcort smart repairs,bodging cars for a quick fix is the name of the game,as dealer's won't pay for a good job trust me!!!.

The old 1.9tdi 130 in the mk1 vrs wont be magicaly better round town. Your low 20's is pretty poor imo anyway, i get mid 30's without much effort

How much is the fabia? sounds expensive if your getting £5k part ex for yours.

The Fabia is a 56 plate and has 61k miles on the clock. It's had 2 owners 1st one was used as company car second owner was a woman. Full service/history MOT not due until September but needs road tax.

it will be better, I get around 40 mpg driving around town, easy get it up to 65 on a long run, it depends how far you live from work, if its a short trip I wouldn't advise a diesel as when they are cold, they're Mpg is probably worse than a petrol, a small engined petrol car is best for driving around town.

What age/mileage is your octy vrs?

£6k sounds a lot for that fabia,more so with the problems with the paint & alloys,pal of mine has bought a 55 plate fabia vrs with 70k on it for £4k & its mint.

Im very suprised about the above claim of 40mpg though. Have you driving it through town to see what the mpg is like?

I have and even though I didn't drive it very far it only managed to get up to 25mpg :(

However like you say you need to drive it for maybe a bit longer. I commute a round trip to work 30 miles a day all urban. Best mpg in my Octy Vrs on this journey was 29mpg and that is a petrol car. Do you not think it's worth me parting my car for the Fabia?

It never works out financially. You're best off keeping the Octavia vRS.

I made the same assumption a few years back. Changed my Civic Type R which averaged 33 mpg, for a Passat 1.9 PD130. I ended up saving about £15 per month on fuel roughly (can't remember the exact math), as the Passat struggled to better 41 mpg. Then I was hit with a load of repair bills for the diesel engined Passat, which I doubt my CTR would of had.

To cut a long story short - long term changing to diesel cost me more.

42mpg from a 130tdi......thats insanely bad. You must have had big problems with that engine what you bought the car

It was able to hit 62 mpg (OBC calculation), on an extremely careful long run (from Oxford to Worcester). However, average tank to tank I could never better 41 mpg. Perhaps it was my type of driving - mainly city rush hour with a couple of dual carriageways between, perhaps they aren't great stop/start engines. Not too sure?

I do find it amusing when people state figures which really stand out then when it gets to the details there is a obvious reason for it. No engine is great at stop start driving, all engines mpg will suffer

I would hated to part a Honda Civic Type-R and then find out your actually not saving that much at all! :( I love the Type-R's. Speaking of Honda's, I had a Honda Civic 2.2CTDI Type-S GT as a courtesy car once! :) I liiked it so much I asked if i could keep it for an extra 4 days! IMHO the new Civic's look very stylish and the interior is very Space Invaders/futuristic. Loved the start button and all the gizmo's.

Going back to the Fabia i drove today, when the bloke put half a tank of diesel in at the pump, the computer displayed a range of 145 miles? Surely that can't be correct, can it?

Did I state that it did poor miles per gallon on good runs in my original post? No. I answered a question regarding driving a PD130 in urban conditions. I am very much aware that a car around down will struggle to reach anywhere near optimum fuel consumption figures.

Going back to mpg, how acurate would you say the computer is on the dashboard that calculates mpg?

It depends - on my Octavia vRS TFSI my read-out currently states i'm doing 28.7 mpg's over 300 miles. However, when I did the calculation manually, from empty to brim and divide miles by gallons used - my computer UNDER READS BY 0.9 mpg's. I actually averaged 29.6 mpg's.

My PD130 on board computer was optomistic by about 1.5 mpg's.

the range is based on how you have been driving, could have been that they hadn't been driving for very long or just thrashing it. My old Fabia VRS was purcahsed as I had to get rid of my type R. I must have averaged mid 20s in the civic if I was lucky, 300 miles out of a tank was rare, managed 220 a few times, lol but it was bloody good fun. The Fabia averaged 49 in the year I owned it for so it was a means to an end as I needed something cheaper to run.

I now have a pd105 Octavia that is sharked and around town, it is absolutely fine and will hit 40mpg + quite easily. In the 2 and a half years I have owned it I have averaged 51mpg over the last 30,000 miles and with £110 tax and 16" tyres it is much cheaper than my civic and slightly on the Fabia, but so much bigger for my growing family.

Oh and the alloys, they tend to bubble if they have been curbed unless it is a Merc as they are awful. I would say that you want them stripped back so that the bubbling doesn't happen again.

Price doesn't seem too bad, you don't have the hassle of selling private and the dealer is out to make money. Does the Fabia come with a years warranty?

I loved my Furby. But I doubt it could do that much better on the short town trips than my Octy can - purely because you would have to be so very disciplined on rev control - and the Furby LOVES to growl around short runs! It's like a go-kart on steroids. Keep the Octy revs below 2.5 and you could probably do the same.

If it's not purely fuel, as I suspect, then you perhaps think about a non sporty version. (My insurance is £250 whether I drive a Furby, an Octy or a TVR - dunno how that works)
