DSG - Unpredictable in reverse?

Featured Replies

Hi!

Had my Octavia vRS DSG from new for 5 month now.

Find that when in reverse its unpredictable.

Seems to be really sluggish setting off in reverse when cold in morning, then will fly off in reverse when you breath on the pedal once warmed up.

Is this normal?

3yrs of DSG ownership has taught me a lot about throttle control! With a manual you can dial in a lump of throttle and control movement with the clutch, or a with torque convertor auto you get that slack in the system as the road speed builds to match the engine revs. With DSG you have to be precise with the throttle.

When reversing on the flat or down hill I just release the footbrake and let it start to crawl back using tickover/anti-stall then once moving I apply the faintest whiff of throttle.

When reversing up hill I apply a faint whiff of throttle until it starts to move then another smidgin to keep it moving. When reversing up my steep drive, if I apply insufficient throttle the DSG just "gives up", opens the clutch and I roll back down the drive,

I assume you have hill hold. It causes a slight delay in moving off that can tempt you to squeeze the throttle a little more - that causes the flying back when the brakes release. On cold wet mornings there is a bit of rust on the discs that can cause the brakes to be a little sticky for a while so the effect is increased. Just be patient and be gentle.

Hmm, this is interesting. I don't have a DSG gearbox, but in slow moving traffic once in a while I get a sudden burst of acceleration. Not too bad for me, but any passenger give me dirty looks  I'm normally pretty good with throttle control, but I can't seem to work out what's causing this.

My previous vehicle, a Primera GT, had a "step" at low throttle openings but nothing like the Octy.

As a relatively new Octy owner, I'm beginning to wonder whether there's a fault in the throttle mapping??

Anybody else experienced this?

Hi, try this.

Press throttle to the floor, switch on ignition (stage 1, do not start engine) for about 30 seconds then switch off ignition, release throttle.

I do this occasionally and I think it helps. Disclaimer - (the improvement might be in my head though!)
