Front Discs & Pads

Featured Replies

Firstly, apologies for this post as I know there's info on here about discs and pads.

I'm just trying to get an overview, which I'm sure you'll be able to answer immediately.

I'm looking to replace my front discs and pads. I do approx 10k miles per year.

I've never replaced these before and appear to have standard discs with Mintex pads. Besides them being worn 80%, they have a horrible brake squeal. My brakes have been cleaned several times and do have the anti-squeal parts in the caliper.

So, do I need to buy standard discs and pads for 10k miles per year and secondly, to stop the brake squeal?

Also, what brand are the standard discs and pads?

Where should I go to get a good deal?

Many thanks,

Pagids from Eurocarparts BRISK25 in the checkout for 25% off. A bit of copperslip on the back of the pads should help reduce any brake squeal.

As above but carparts4less will be cheaper and are the same company if you can wait for delivery. I'd advise Padgid or Bosch pads as they're both VAG oem suppliers, don't buy Eicher pads or squeaking will be the least of your worries, it's been argued that ideally you want to match pad compound and discs but you don't have to and copper slip on the rear of the pads will solve the squeak :)

AND- warning- be extremely careful when replacing the retaining bolts . I've had my threads replaced with a helicoil on one and the Skoda layout is like other layouts which my repairer said were favourite for thread stripping. I've replaces pads on a lot of Vauxhall models with similar setup ,but found this Skoda a problem .It's possible that ( as I suspect pads were changed by cowboys ,the thread was damaged), but repair place said they get more VAG ones of this type than anything else .

Assuming you have a VRS the part numbers are as follows;

Pagid brakes

Front disc = 288mm (104440798)

Rear disc = 232mm (104440748)

Front pad = (101441398)

Rear pad = (101440328)

Changing pads and discs is quite easy, it's only 3 bolts and a screw per wheel.

1 bolt to remove the pads (lower guide pin bolt), 2 bolts to remove the calliper from the hub, then a screw to holding the disc to hub.

Only tricky bit is pushing the piston back. I normally use the old pads and crow bar, some people use a G-clamp. Haynes and others state you should renew the guide pin bolt every time. This sometimes comes with the new pads, if not, clean with wire brush and just put a dab of thread lock on it.

Torque bolts to:

Calliper mounting Bracket - 125 Nm (92 lbft)

Lower Guide pin Bolt - 30 Nm (22 lbft)

You can buy the proper rewind tool off ebay for about £10, its a good one to have in your box for future brake work

Hi, about the comment on whether the pads and discs are suitable for 10,000 miles a year. Yes it is always best to get good discs and pads ( I would go for Pagid), they will just wear out quicker the more miles you do, there are no such things as low or high milage brake parts.

As I always say, Brakes and Tyres are the only things that you should never skimp on and replace with non branded cheap stuff. It's basically what keeps you on the ground and what stops you!

Performance is desirable, stopping is essential!

Also change your brake fluid if it's not been done in the last two years, it costs next to nothing but is so often overlooked and can make a massive difference.

I've just invested in some standard discs and pads from TPS. I managed to get them for £83.75, so I'm pretty chuffed at that price. Might as well stay standard, then I know what I'm dealing with.

Will get them fitted next weekend.

Cheers for info guys.

They will probably just be pagid but with a vag stamp on them. But doesn't seem a bad price anyway.
